Logee's 50% off sale

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I got an e-mail from Logee's and this is great time to find some exotic plants very cheaply. I would love to grow Abultilon but I thought it could tolerate shade, but apparently it can't. Anyone have a comment on its sun requirements? www.logees.com

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey Wood! I will have to check that out. As far as the Abutilon, I have always grown them in part shade, getting a bit of early and late sun and they have done fine. This year I left my seedlings in full sun and they still did fine, but did seem to drop lower leaves a bit more. I may have a couple extra if you don't mind a surprise mix. You'll have to trade me seeds later though. LOL So far, I have had ones bloom pink and some yellow.

I really wish you hadn't posted that, now I am poorer, and I have to be patient before those bargain's get here.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Ok Wood, you did it now. hehe

I just purchased my first online plant order and went crazy. I was so excited about doing it, that I forgot to write down what I ordered before I gave them all my info.

It sure is easy to just check the little boxes that say "Add" and then...wow, you have a huge order. lol I bought several of the "sale" items, but then had to take a look at others and sure enough, why not get some more while your ordering anyway.

I then had to ask DH if it was ok for me to order these and he ok'd it as long as I had a place in my gardens for them. He knows that I sometimes buy plants and don't have the space for them. hehe I can't wait to get this order now, and it didn't say how long it takes. I'll have to let you know later what all I got.

A very excited lady right now!

Are y'all going to throw rotten tomatoes at me? Of course, I know the on-line plant buying syndrom. Badseed I think I tried to grow it inside and I have very shady windows. Aren't they supposed to bloom for a long time. I just had one short flush. Thanks for the offer, but I think I will hold off until next year. I have too much that I am fighting with now to get them to bloom.......

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Mine usually bloom all summer. I let them go to seed toward the end. The first year I had one, I did over winter it in a sunny window and rooted several cuttings. Last year I brought some in but they did not do well. Hmmmm.

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

My abutilion are in part shade and are generally doing fairly well. I have a one that I believe is called "little imp" and looks like MEGAPOTAMICUM at logee's. It is struggling and seems to be constantly fighting aphid. Maybe I should move it into more sun. I have 3 others that seem to be okay. This buying spree I went for the hibiscus. Sure hope they survive the long trip.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the information, all. Logee's generally packs quite well. But you must remember, most of their plants are exotics and/or tropicals and are not hardy in most of the U.S. A greenhouse or conservatory would be nice........

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Wood, that's why I bought so many plants, as they do well here in my Zone 10 climate. hehe

George, are you still watching this thread???

Have you received your order yet from Logee's? I checked my "order status" with them last weekend and it said plants were shipped, but I have not received them yet. I try to remember to call them after the mail comes, but because of the time difference, 3 hrs., they are always closed. I guess I will just have to call on Monday morning.

I'm worried that they are in limbo somewhere baking in a hot truck.

Donna

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

Mine are baking in the same truck. I believe the "shipped" was on 7/3. My experience with priority mail has been very good. I wonder what "shipped" really means?

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Thanks George for letting me know that our plants are doing well "together". haha

I will definitely call them tomorrow morning.

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

yeah, logees does that... they will ship on any day of the week.
Shipping Mondays/Tuesdays generally insures that they will get to anywhere in the continental usa by wednesday-thursday.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

George,

Here's an update on my plant order. I just got off the phone with them and she told me that when they actually process the order, they put "shippment sent" on the web site, but that doesn't mean they shipped it yet. In fact, she looked up my order and it was just shipped today....a whole week later than they posted.

So yours is probably going about the same time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for both of us.

I confirmed the same thing. Let's see which letter carrier wins the foot race from CT to here.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

OK, it's a race....

They just arrived. Shipped Monday in CT, arrived before noon Wednesday in CA. Each plant individually wrapped in white paper. Whole box was well padded to insure safe arrival. Plants look healthy and ready to grow!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Well George I guess they must have hopped the same flight out from CT. I just got home tonite and my box had also arrived in wonderful condition. I had left instructions with my DH, that if the box came while I was gone, to please open it and give it some fresh air. I can't wait to really look at these beauties tomorrow and make them welcome. I don't have their paper catalog and was hoping they would enclose one for me, but they didn't. So I guess I'll have to look up the plants again online.

I guess you can tell what I'll be doing tomorrow.

OMGoodness, I received my package from Logee's yesterday, and all of the plants are in prime condition....I did call them beforehand to find out when I would be receiving them, and they told me the 16th or the 17th.
I asked them to include the catalog, and they did.

I also requested individual instructions on the Super Nova Brug I ordered, and that was mailed almost immediately. Glad I did that, because Brugs are totally new to me, and I had alot of time to study, along w/all the advice on DG!

SoCal, I so understand what you are saying about having too many plants and not knowing what to do w/them...my husband is always saying (with that look in his eyes), 'as long as you have room for them, honey'.

I ordered Megapotamicun variegated, Ruffles, and Bartley Schwartz with 3 large buds ready to open.
After having seen their full catalog, I would love to order more, but want to see how these do first. I may weaken, though! LOL

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

grakay,

Glad to hear that your plants are nice looking also. I am really looking forward to seeing some of these unusual plants that I bought, in bloom.

Here is one of the Hibiscus I received (Sun Showers.) I moved it from the 2" pot to a 4" pot. I need to clear some shrubs to make room for it and the other four. This is the only one that looks like it will bloom at this small size. This is one of two blooms. Poor thing doesn't realize that the bloom is bigger than the plant.

So George4tax, do you think these hibiscus will survive out side thru winter?

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

I expect they will. We don't get more than a couple of days in a row of 32º or below. I protect them with cover at that time. The little ones like this will likely move into the protected atrium, right up against a nice warm wall. Haven't lost any yet and this will be the 6th winter for some.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What kind of cover do you use? Some winters I lose my regular hibiscus. Last winter I lost a few new tropical hibiscus. But I had not covered them. I can never keep any alive if they are in pots outside.

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

I use just about anything. Mostly paint dropclothes & plastic sheeting - held away from the plants to create a little hothouse. In one section I staple against the upper portion fence and bring it down to the ground in front of the planting area to create a "tent." In a pot, I would consider putting an inverted garbage can over them at night - or something like that. Old tomato cages covered with something could also work.
Something else I have not tried, but it reported works is christmas lights. String them around the plants and light it up. Looks pretty and the heat from the lamps ups the temp.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I will have to try that this winter. I moved everything in to my a hoophouse last winter but I won't have room for everything this winter. I wonder if I can some how attach plastic sheeting to stucco. MY DH would kill me. We also have such wind here. I sure hope we have as mild a winter as we did last year. I could have left everything out.

Thanks for your pointers George4tax!

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

I drove wooden stacks into the ground next to the stucco. I figured the nails might show through into the bedroom.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I will have to be creative! thanks

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

It looks like I started a stampede to Logee's. I am so glad that they were the quality that I remember getting from them.
