air conditioned greenhouse??????

Brooklet, GA(Zone 8a)

yep this is what we are doing to my greenhouse. this way i can tend to house plants during the summer in th gh and also start fall cool weather crops when time. ;ike cabbage and onions and collard greens etc. i am so excited about this idea. hope to finish tomorrow before dh has surgery on friday.

Boy, I'd love to tend plants in a/c - sounds like a dream come true!

Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

dg would kill me if i even suggested that lol. please take pictures. how are you insulated? details please. my gh is 110º+ with 2 fans blowing and everything open.

along this thread...
i do to an extent a/c some of my greenhouses...
not with an actual AC unit, it would be way too inefficient.

I have cool cells, essentially cardboard-like fibers. The fans draw air through them, and you have misters hitting them with water.

drops the temp a good 10-15 degrees.... add 40% shade to the house it could drop another 10 degrees.

Just curious as to why you wouldn't put your house plants outside for the summer? Mine grow SO much better out in the open.

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

datdog, have you ever had to grow 10,000 plants to full size in 10 months when it takes 14 months?

trust me, it is easier to do in a climate controlled greenhouse.
If i was just a plant collector, I probably would (and did)

on my 5 acres i only have 1 shade tree at this time. i just wanted somewhere cooler to work for the summer and this gets me into a place by my self and with my plants. best of both worlds, lol.

I'm with you now jcf. I know how it is to not have shade. I had three acres that had two little pines on it. I swore NEVER again. I spent more time mowing then should have been legal. Gardening in the hot sun 100% of the time stinks. Good luck with your venture. Let us know how it turns out.

Deeproots- I understand your concept. Use to work in a GH that had the same set up.

Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

i mentioned this thread to dh and he was surprisingly agreeable to the idea. that and he hates when i cry because my plants are dying from the heat. and i pointed out how many fans i have going so the electric bill will not be jumping anywhere. oh the possibilities lol. thanks for starting this thread jcf.

Brooklet, GA(Zone 8a)

i finally got it running today. will let you all know how it goes in a day or two.

i am so upset. after getting the a/c cleaned and instaled the compresser went out. the a/c just 5 yrs old. warranty gone. so my dream of a cooler gh for the summer is gone. i just sat there and cried.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, shoot! Sorry to hear that - I know how excited you were about that, Janet!

Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

oh, what a let down, i'm so sorry

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Janet, please don't cry! I too, just HATE the heat!

This is what I found the other day for $63. at an Eckerd's Drug store! (We had been looking at them in a catalog for over $100.) And wow, does it work well (as long as you're far enough away to not be completely drenched!) It has 3 speeds, adjusts up and down, and can oscillate too!The mist is extremely fine.

vi, thanks,we just an eckerds here i am going to check this out tomorrow.

Oh, that is NEAT. The company I used to work for had misting pavilions outdoors for its employees at their HQ in Medford, Oregon. The fine mist really made a big difference out in the lunch area, they said. I always wanted to go out to see them (well, to see Oregon, but that would have been a nice side-stop!).

We have something called "Polar Cool Fans" they use a huge fan, have cellulose pads in the back, a tray in the bottom that holds a lot of water and a circulating pump that keeps the pads wet. It's like deeproot's system, except it's portable. It's self contained and has big air inflated tires. We use it to cool a specific area of gh down or to cool the workers when we are planting and it's hot(like mum planting time). Sometimes DH will go get a big block of ice to go in the tray, wow, that really cools it down! The fans using water alone will bring the air temp down 10-20*(depends on the area you're trying to cool) and if you add ice, it goes even lower. They cost about $2000-2500 each but they were worth it!
