How to Yucca Care

Penfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm helping a friend with a garden and it has been neglected. He has large yuccas in his front bed. They are hardy here and I suppose they are y. glauca. They have lots of dead leaves inside, lots of plants are in one group. How should I prune these? Chop to the ground in the fall or spring? Or should I reduce their size by digging out the side plants. They have had nothing done to them in 15 years. Any help would be appreciated as I don't have any experience with these.

I have Yucca Gloriosus and only clean out the dead leaves. It seems to self prune (i.e. limbs fall off when ready.) I would think just cleaning out the dead leaves should be sufficient, but I am sure it will probably handle a heavy pruning. I found http://www.bennyskaktus.dk/Yucca_UK.htm during my search, maybe you can find some help there.

Thanks for the help. I'll just reach inside and pull out all the dead I can. Maybe the air getting in there will help it. They are pretty ratty looking but have big flower stalks coming up. I know the hummingbirds like them so I hate to thin them out just now.

There is a local gardening show on a pbs channel from the University of Illinois at Champaign and they talked about yuccas last week. One guy showed the yucca from his yard that he had 'knocked' off after the flowers finished blooming. It was the entire plant! He said that he does that every year and in about two weeks new growth emerges and continues to grow and look good the rest of the summer! I've never tried that but I'm sure tempted. Just an idea I heard recently.
