Anyone have experience with Hardy Sugar Cane?

Zone 6, OH(Zone 6a)

Saccharum arundinaceum (Hardy Sugar Cane) - I'm going to give it a try...says zone 6 and it looks great :) I'll put it in my grass bed. If it dies, no big loss I guess...it's not too expensive. Anyone ever see or grow any?

I'm also going to try Rudbeckia maxima. I tried to get it last year but they were sold out:

And finally, Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Avalanche' (Feather Reed Grass). Another plant for my grass bed. Looks cool. I hope it does well!

all you do to plant sugar cane, the type you make cane syrup from, is lay the cane down in the bed and lightly cover. fall planting is best. you will get a new cane from every bud looking area. or at least this is what my brother-in-law told me to doa nd so far it is doing ok.

The plant I'm getting will be in a 1 or 2 quart container and will already be growing. I was just wondering if someone has actually seen it in person or grown it themselves. I found some sites on the net related to this grass...and apparently there's a zoo site that I found and they feed it to animals that love to eat grass.

I'd love to see some of it...I got out bid on ebay on some 3 different times and just gave up......

You can buy it at Plant Delights (nursery) on the web.

hczone6- I know someone who grows the Saccharum arundinaceum. It grows HUGE! I'm talking the LARGEST grass I've EVER seen. It was a focal point of his garden. The clump had to be about 10 feet around and 15 feet high.

Was this in your area? NJ? If so, I guess I can look forward to a nice big clump like that :)

I'm not sure if it can compete with the height of my miscanthus giganteus...which is VERY tall. Maybe they'll work out to be about the same. But I think the miscanthus is more hardy and may end up getting taller.

Yes, this was here in New Jersey. It will get larger then your miscanthus.

Cool...I hope so :) My giant miscanthus gets about 15ft tall. This photo is the giant miscanthus growing in light shade, before bloom. It still had more to grow and it was to the top of the shovel in my hand already. I'm about 5'9". You can't tell from the angle of the photo...but the grass DOES go to the top of the shovel in that picture.

I moved 2 clumps out into full sun and we'll see how tall it gets this year.

I think my arundo donax got a little taller than the giant miscanths last year.

hc, hardy sugar cane has been growing in Oxford, OH, since '99!

I saw a slide of it a couple of weeks ago -- superb! It should go great in your garden. It looked slightly taller than the photo you show above, but hard to tell, nothing to compare it to.
