Gangly Tall Lilacs

Would like to know how to trim neglected lilacs that have 10 ft. woody (bare) trunks, but some growth and afew flowers onthe tops. There are a few sprouts of new growth at the bottom. Don't want to kill it, just revive it, if possible. Thanks so much!
