Exactly what does Epsom salt do for plants? I see it is mainly magnesium, which is why it is also a laxative.....

I'm curious too. I've heard it's good for roses but what does it do for other plants? I just bought a bag and don't know what to do with it.........LOL

i guess that's why plants are in the potty. lol ok i couldn't resist.
from what i understand and seen is; it promotes root growth and helps to green up yellowing plants. oh and in asparagus it helps keep down weeds.

I have used it on tomatoes and also on my brugs, mixed with water of course

Q: Why is Epsom Salt good for plants?
A: Epsom Salt is magnesium sulfate. Magnesium is a mineral plants need for a stronger root structure and to facilitate the uptake of chlorophyll. Its use is advocated by many master gardeners and landscape professionals.

well, I was curious, I couldnt remember exactly so did a search, here are some links for you

Epsom salts can help keep plants healthy, especially peppers and roses, says master gardener Paul James. For example, if you have a problem with peppers rotting, soak the soil with a solution of Epsom salts. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of Epsom salts crystals in 1 gallon of hot water. Allow the mixture to cool, then soak the base of your plants just as they begin to flower.

Epsom salts can work wonders on roses too. You can apply the salts in solution or sprinkle a few tablespoons around the base of your plants each spring.

"I've heard that Epsom salts work for houseplants," James adds, "because the magnesium sulfate helps cleanse the soil of harmful salts that tend to accumulate in the pots."

Magnesium sulfate, also called Epsomsalt, gives hibiscus foliage a good darkgreen color. Add at the rate of one table-spoon per gallon of pot size to pots on amonthly schedule during the growingseason. You can also spray magnesiumsulfate on the foliage at the rate of onetablespoon per gallon of water. Epsom saltdoes not change the soil pH. It is consideredpH neutral

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

I heard, (can't remember where) that it also does something to the soil to release other nutrients to the plant. Similar to what Pebble said.
