Slug Trap

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I noticed some slug damage,so I had to set up a trap.
The way I do it is.
Set a plastic pot drainage tray in the ground, deep enough that the mulch will be level with the rim.
Drive in 8 inch pieces of PVC,so they stick up 1 inch above the rim.
put beer in tray, and cover with a stepping stone.

That is very clever. I have to use the covered traps to keep my dogs from drinking the beer (and the slugs - - - YUCK). Your design is also decorative.

I am impressed - - way to go Rootdoc.

I just looked back and see two slugs on my back glass door. I'm having alot of rain, but even before I have them sliming up the side of the house. And, now I see alot of them outside on the siding and I can put salt on all of them. LOL, How do you get rid of this many that are not in the yard??? HELP!!!!

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Wow - the war of the Slugs. Never heard of them crawling up the house, sounds like a killer variety to me. Maybe you could just spray them with salty water!! I wouldn't put salt on the ground tho or too much anywhere it would run down on the ground - you would not be able to plant anything there for a long time.

Dr, your trap is very clever, waste of good beer tho I think! I toss bait pellets around for them to dine on.

Your my HERO Root!

New York City, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice idea, Root..., I'll have to give it a try as I'm finding some slug damage in my hosta patch. It's nearly a sin to waste beer, though.

Adam.

PS: Those EEs you sent are growing like mad in a west window. Gorgeous. Everyone comments on them. Pics soon.

Root that is very clever and attractive.

Poorgeorge I usually spray slugs with 1/2 vinegar & 1/2 water. Takes care of them every time. That should work outside of the garden.

Rootdoctor we use beer traps also and find them very effective. Another organic method that I am going to try is porridge oats. Aparrently slugs love them and as they gorge themselves on them they dehydrate and die!! :)
Putting in a pond and introducing frogs is also a great help.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Psilo, what are porridge oats? Anything close to oatmeal? Thx :)

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

yes morph I think they are more or less the same thing.
Anyway I can report that they seem to be working as my courgettes and pumpkins have been untouched.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

rootdoctor, I have been using traps like yours with success. Thanks for the idea.

However, something is pulling out the traps from under the paving stones every night, and I find the containers several inches away from the stones, and usually dry.

Any clues as to what critter might do this?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

psilo, dry oats?

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks rootdoctor, I also have had some success with the beer trap. I will post a pic of mine soon. It has really helped with the hosta bed!

yes Tig. Dry Bran is also supposed to work, just sprinkled in a circle around the plants.
