I noticed some slug damage,so I had to set up a trap.
The way I do it is.
Set a plastic pot drainage tray in the ground, deep enough that the mulch will be level with the rim.
Drive in 8 inch pieces of PVC,so they stick up 1 inch above the rim.
put beer in tray, and cover with a stepping stone.
Slug Trap
That is very clever. I have to use the covered traps to keep my dogs from drinking the beer (and the slugs - - - YUCK). Your design is also decorative.
I am impressed - - way to go Rootdoc.
I just looked back and see two slugs on my back glass door. I'm having alot of rain, but even before I have them sliming up the side of the house. And, now I see alot of them outside on the siding and I can put salt on all of them. LOL, How do you get rid of this many that are not in the yard??? HELP!!!!
Wow - the war of the Slugs. Never heard of them crawling up the house, sounds like a killer variety to me. Maybe you could just spray them with salty water!! I wouldn't put salt on the ground tho or too much anywhere it would run down on the ground - you would not be able to plant anything there for a long time.
Dr, your trap is very clever, waste of good beer tho I think! I toss bait pellets around for them to dine on.
Your my HERO Root!
LOL!Azelea, the best way to load the trap is to walk around the day after a party and empty the Not so empty beers in the trap,We don't waste good beer here!LOL,
Root: Very nice stepping stone. What a clever idea. Did you get my emails, with the photos attached. I noticed on another thread where you were having trouble with one of your email addys.
Yes Debby, did you get my return mail???Hope you are well, tell Ted I said hello!you should show off that pond he made, not too many indoor ones!
Root: Your email must be floating in cyberspace, didn't get it. I still want your SALSA Recipe, it is soo good, I usually can't eat hot--spicy, but I can that. We all are hooked on it. I am going to try the slug trap, last year they riddled my hostas. Talk to ya later.
Let me try you from my other mailbox, will send salsa rec.,back to work right now.Later.:0)
hey! if you're going to share it, would love to have a copy!!!
Rootdoctor, that is the best idea. No more beer for the dogs!
Salsa receipe, please.......in the receipe Forum, PLEASE!!
"eyes"
Dr. Root, that is the cleverest slug contraption I have seen....
did You pot your salsa recipe??? I'm going to go check now and hope it's there? or is it a big family secret?
Very nice idea, Root..., I'll have to give it a try as I'm finding some slug damage in my hosta patch. It's nearly a sin to waste beer, though.
Adam.
PS: Those EEs you sent are growing like mad in a west window. Gorgeous. Everyone comments on them. Pics soon.
Root that is very clever and attractive.
Poorgeorge I usually spray slugs with 1/2 vinegar & 1/2 water. Takes care of them every time. That should work outside of the garden.
Rootdoctor we use beer traps also and find them very effective. Another organic method that I am going to try is porridge oats. Aparrently slugs love them and as they gorge themselves on them they dehydrate and die!! :)
Putting in a pond and introducing frogs is also a great help.
Psilo, what are porridge oats? Anything close to oatmeal? Thx :)
yes morph I think they are more or less the same thing.
Anyway I can report that they seem to be working as my courgettes and pumpkins have been untouched.
rootdoctor, I have been using traps like yours with success. Thanks for the idea.
However, something is pulling out the traps from under the paving stones every night, and I find the containers several inches away from the stones, and usually dry.
Any clues as to what critter might do this?
psilo, dry oats?
Thanks rootdoctor, I also have had some success with the beer trap. I will post a pic of mine soon. It has really helped with the hosta bed!
yes Tig. Dry Bran is also supposed to work, just sprinkled in a circle around the plants.
