Moles!!

Saint Croix County, WI(Zone 4a)

Good afternoon everyone! My mother asked me to post a query regarding any suggestions for mole removal (animal friendly of course!). She's tried several deterrents with no success. Anyone experience similiar problems??

jerry baker had a funny remedy, it included human hair and urine....and you kind of drop it in their holes. I've never had this problem, but the remedy was so outrageous that I remembered it..... Maybe you could do a google search on jerry baker remedies?

Traps or a good cat - all the other remedies are a waste of time, effort, and money. I bought several Nash choker type traps and they worked, but took a lot of time and effort and are very difficult to set.

I've just learned to live with them and accept their activities as soil aeration that I would otherwise have to pay for.

Voles, however, are another matter. One word - Rozol.

To get rid of the moles, you have to get rid of their food source. Milkyspore and beneficial nematoids are the answer.

I saw a ad that had as it's base castor oil. I am going to try that, soaked in cat litter. Usually, I live trap and relocate them to the conservancy so that they can do their nature thing in the wild, but if I can't catch up with the little one this season-it is castor oil for him.

Thanks MB, I'm sure she's willing to try anything at this point! She's tried the live trapping but with every one we move out, two move seem to move in! Just like the woodchucks, they just keep coming back.

I haven't tried the milky spore because it's expensive. What I do is use the Nash Choker Loop trap. I've caught 5 so far this spring. 3 of them in about 5 days...all in the same tunnel (they're stupid...lol) I've tried a few other traps and the Nash Choker is the most reliable. It gets them every time if it's set right and in an active traveling tunnel (not feeding tunnels). Trust me, there's no shortage of moles...and there certainly is no shortage where I am, so I have no problem exterminating them. I don't like to kill things...but when I came home from a 5 day out of town trip the other day, the moles had run all through my beds, back and forth. This is disater for new plants since they aren't rooted yet. I was furious! Next time I see them come back in a good tunnel near my beds, there will for sure be a trap set and I hope they get it!...lol I'm sorry, but I'm one of the most compassionate animal lovers (ask anyone that knows me)...but when it comes to moles, the only good mole on my piece of land is a dead mole. Period. I've had it with them. If they stayed in the lawn, ok. But get in my beds and you've had it.

Well, I can't believe that I'm gonna say this, but something worked for me, just not sure what!

I bought this "mole pole" http://shop.store.yahoo.com/harrietcarter/molpolscarro.html
after hearing results on the Birds and Blooms forums, but didn't think it worked. I removed all my mulch--I've always used shredded leaves--and not a sign of the moles for at least 1 month now. So although something must have worked--not sure which! Let me tell that this thing is definitely not quiet--or maybe it needs to be really sunk farther into the ground! Guess I'll find out when I mulch again!
