Plant combinations/colors

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

I thought it would be interesting to share successes/failures of planting combinations we have made in containers or landscapes. For example I have planted jolly joker pansies in large containers with Princess Irene tulip. Philomel's great pictures on the bulb forum sparked this idea. I also like Crocosmia Lucifer planted with Nepeta ( I can't recall the particular catmint it was ; I want to say Seven Hills something or other). In this combo the blue and red color was stunning as well as the two contrasting leaf textures.Any ideas or pictures??

Weezin has one particularly stunning image of Calendula 'Touch of Buff' blooming with Myosotis sylvatica interspersed. It's a gorgeous combination (hard to recreate where I live, since the Calendulas tend to bloom later than the FMG's.) I'm going to try to get a similar effect by pairing the same cultivar with Cynoglossum.

This year, DD and I planted two moss-lined hanging baskets with red double petunias paired with blue and white lobelia. No photo ops so far, but I think they'll be pretty once everything takes off and fills in. (It was inspired by similar baskets filled with pink 'Madness' petunias edged by white Bacopa.)

I also like blue and yellow together - I've got 'Blue Daze' Evolvulus and yellow "Million Bells" (Callibrachoa) in a planter box.

I've got another container filled with a multi-colored Perilla, 'Black Dragon' Coleus, amethyst-colored lobelia, 'Burgundy Duchess' Torenia, and Helichrysum.

And I'm always looking for new ideas, so I'm looking forward the responses here.

Gotta love the two sweet potatoe vines, Blackie and Marguarite, together in a container. Speechless.

Yellow and purple do sound pretty together, I have a partiality to blue and orange, I planted two containers with orange symphony osteospermum and anagallis monelli and blue lobelia. This year for my hanging baskets I am trying two kinds of dwarf morning glory. So far they are slow. I have also being planting many various containers with red and white for Katy's wedding.
Terry, I do love all the calibrochas too, I put them into the ground last year and will do again this year. They make such a nice mat of color.

i put calibrocha into google search and it came up with only 4 responses all gardenweb and daves. is there another name i might have better luck with to see a picture. thanks

Debi, try million bells which is a common name for the calibrochas.

This search for Calibrachoa http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=calibrachoa returned 3,980 results.

It's much less frequently spelled Callibrachoa, which is how I (mis)spelled it above :o)

I sowed some CA poppies for the first time and let us just say that orange and purple are a combination allowable ONLY in Nature! The orange poppies are set amongst light purple bearded iris, dark purple 'Hidecote' lavendar, and few assorted agapanthus, snapdragons, and a big bush marigold (Tagetes lemonii). People are literally stopping their cars in the street and asking me for the names of the flowers I'm growing.

I agree with Lenjo about the beauty of anagallis monelli, too. The dark blue is just gorgeous and I can't believe how fast one of the anagallis plants grew and bloomed -- it was a little tiny thing in a 4" pot a month ago and now it's almost 2' tall and as wide! But the other one isn't much more than 10" yet, so I guess I was just lucky with one extra-vigorous specimen.

I've been looking for blue flowering plants this year because it's a hard color to find in a long-blooming perennial, and would go so well with the yellows and purples we already have. My delphiniums didn't come back, and a prized cape plumbago was unfortunately situated in a bed right below where some dry rot was discovered in an exterior wall. 4" of stucco debris has not been good for its overall health, although I'm hoping it will recover by the summertime.

lenjo, sorry we didn't get to see each other when i was in Oregon. You were busy and I didn't know when I would be where. We did go to Silverton and looked at some of the falls. Drove around the area and enjoyed it. We went on to Jefferson where I lived when I was 5 and 6. Actually I think found the place where i lived, even with my very sketchy memory. Had a great time. Really enjoyed Forest Farm. They let us walk around and pick out plants in two of their greenhouses. They really have a lot of very unusual plants. Bought too many and now have to find time to get them planted besides all the ones I grew from seed. Donna

I thought I'd try to restart this thread, because it's a great idea, but without pictures it's hard to visualize. I'll add one combination that happened by accident, but next year I'm going to plan it - chamomile and lavender, plant the chamomile behind the lavender and it will grow through it - here's a picture. I have a couple others, anyone else have some pictures of their great ideas?

Wow..this goes back to 2003..and I see near the top of the thread I posted my planter box with pansies that year.

This year I planted purple wave petunias and pink double petunias along with a trailing pink flower ..Diascia I think.
It makes a good show and I will do this again next year

Cindyeo, I LOVE the chamomile/lavender combination! I'm putting in an herb garden, and that would be a wonderful border around something or other.

wow cindyeo, hot hot hot!!!

Starzz, very pretty planter, I like the double petunias and singles together, gives it more texture.

Cindyeo..yes..texture..good word..I knew I liked it..but I went and looked at it again..and thought about texture :) Thanks.

Debi...that is a divider on the deck between the sitting area and the spa. The black boxes are speakers that bring the music outside from the CD player.
I have a switch box in the house to turn the speakers on or off.

Cheers,
Carol
