No More Quince...

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

YEAH!! I've always hated this bush. To my surprise, DH pulled it out with the pickup truck yesterday. I took him all day. The roots were everywhere. This is hole left behind. Maybe I can plant something nice now :)

Here's the bush. Man was it heavy. It's out with the trash & brush for pick-up anything week.

don't count on it being gone yet. I have one that still sends up shoots every year and it's been "gone" for about 8 years! They are persistant.

LOl Kathleen. I figured the suckers would be sprouting up. That's why I've hated the bush so much. You give it an inch and it takes a mile. My lilac is the same way. I'd like to haul that one out too but I'm sure it would take my retaining wall with it... and probably half the house. I spose I'll have to live with it for now.

I hate it too. But it came from DH's yard where he lived as a kid. so I'm stuck. Glad you got rid of yours!!

One in my neighborhood is planted next to a yellow forsythia... usually the pink-copper color is gross in combination, but this year it has bloomed an almost primary red. Much better. Maybe it heard me complain every year... I should try to get a 'don't let this happen to you' photo...

pardancanda,
that is a good idea. a place where we could post our warnings to other gardeners. i didn't know that about quince or lilacs. i certainly didn't know that the artemesia silver king i planted last year was going to send out shoots 3 feet in every direction and i'd have to spend 6 hours tracking down all the little shoots, around my bulbs, up against the arbor vitaes trunk. oy vey now that would be a good "warning plant".

So whatcha gonna plant in its place?

I had to pull a large spirea out last fall, and I still don't know what I am going to put in the empty space; I wanted a dwarf shrub, but that sure wasn't a dwarf! It was tagged 'Goldmound' but it grew to more than 4' high and around. I would love some ideas!

I'm going to wait before I plant anything permanent in there. I want to see if I keep the suckers under control first. I have a lot of cannas that will need a home. Maybe some of my brug seedlings too. Or... I was thinking maybe I'd much the whole area real heavy and keep all my containers there....
