I worked, and worked. After all the work? I could see hardly anything to show for it. I have got a long way to go. Should have done more fall clean up, as that is what I did today (yesterday).

Today I pulled out the allyssum bed that has been self-perpetuating for the past 10 years. Here in Phoenix they never die if you water them, and continually re-seed as well. But over the generations they have become more rangy and the colors have faded to pale. Also, they were in a more shaded location than what they really like.
My nurturing spouse was growing the worlds largest crop of snails as an understory. But they must have died of overpopulation. There were a few days this spring that the bed was sorta smelly, and when I removed the carpet of allyssum, every snail was dead. They were so thick on the ground they were practically touching, and when I stepped in the bed the ground crunched!!
I've turned the whole thing over and re-composted and am ready to put something new in. I was thinking sweet woodruff as it is so shady between the garage and sidewalk, under the overhang. What do you all think?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

We spent the entire day outside up until about an hour ago when the stupid wind came up so strong.

We planted 16 trees, 5 yet to plant. We watered and fed the trees we have planted the last two years, (150+). We started working on forming up the shade bed by the new house. We are taking a break while the spuds bake and there's a roast in the crock pot. After we eat, if the wind goes down we will be back outside to finish up what we started. If the wind keeps blowing, we have brug seeds to plant in pots and tomato plants to repot into larger ones.

It was really nice for awhile today, but then the wind came up again. We have had high winds every day for the past week. It's getting pretty tiresome.

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

We had beautiful weather today. I just came inside. I put down mulch, weeded, and planted some new flowers. It feels great to be tired tonight!!!Lou

Joan, I spent last week doing the opposite of you! I dug and potted up about 20 of my tree saplings! LOL Helping local friends re-forest some of their new former ag lands with some native hardwood saplings.

I still haven't gotten a lot of my plants in the ground, but I can actually see the ground again where I planned for them to go, after having divided most of my overgrown perennials in my shady beds. My sunny beds? Well that is another story... Dividing them a month ago made them increase back to their former size, or even bigger! LOL Got a friend coming Tuesday to help me dig them up, then she is going to take them all home with her!
