Compost bin, finally

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

We were given two stackable compost bins last summer, but didn't get them put up. Today, we went through and salvaged one bin from the two; much of the timber was rotten on them. This doesn't look so pretty or stack so well, but it should do the trick, anyway. :)

There are four pieces stacked there, root, so I can take the top-most one off. Have you ever used those tools which act sort of like a toggle bolt? They go down in with the wings up against the pole, but when you pull them out, the wings expand and pull the compost apart. I've often wondered if these are as effective as turning the pile completely. With our bad backs, we may opt for just letting it sit and compost au natural.

GW are you talking about the garden weazel?is that the name of it?it screws into the soil or compost and airates it?I have been curious about those, let me know if you get one.I want to know how it works.

Those tools really don't work well. I have four bins. Instead of turning it a bin, I remove the compost from one bin and transfer it into an empty bin. This allows the bottom portion to be replaced with the top portion.

It is not so much work, my husband helps me. I fill small plastic containers with compost and he dumps it. Otherwise alone one has to keep getting up and down. I also have a bad back and a bad knee.
