Echinacea 'Doppelganger' (double coneflower)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I saw these in the Jackson & Perkins spring perennials catalog. Wouldn't these have to be propagated by root division rather than seed in order to remain true?

Thompson & Morgan has something similar, Echinacea 'Razzmatazz', and they're selling them bareroot: http://www.thompson-morgan.com/plants/uk/product_7508_1.html

As far as I know, there's no seed available for these double-flower/flore pleno "introductions". I haven't looked at T&M or J&P, but did you see the price at Wayside? I just about spewed coffee all over the catalog when I saw they were asking $22/plant. It's an interesting plant, but not THAT interesting, IMO.

At J&P they were 3/$14 or "save" and get $6/$27.95. I wouldn't even pay that for 2.5" pots. :S

In a few years, they wil be more available and more affordable.

Razzmatazz is sold out, has been for over a month, so either there werent many available, or a lot of silly people out there.

I STILL want one, but can wait.

Oh! *blush*....I was wondering why I was getting no replies to my request for a trade of seeds! My newbie-ness is showing.

LOL! :-D

LOL Sue! Guess you will have to hang in there awile till the prices drop so our friends here will be willing to buy them!

They are cute looking though. kind of like a little girl in her mommies skirt and a big floppy easter hat!

Check out the monarda I had bloom double like this in 2001. I wish I'd marked which plant it was. http://davesgarden.com/t/51192/

LOL GW, I remember that one, it looked like a bridesmaid that did not get to pick out her most flattering dress style, but the Bride sure looked good standing next to her!

Zanymuse- For sure, I'll be looking for these to have a price drop next season so I can have one! $22 for a coneflower is.......just wrong! LOL! It's so pretty tho.

Gardenwife-That's a great picture!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Yeah, made the bridesmaid look a little hippy, didn't it, Zany? ;) Thanks, Sue! If I ever see the plant produce double-tiered flowers like that again, I'm going to mark it and divide it. My monarda really had a rough time last year and didn't bloom much at all. Hope it'll bounce back this season.

Kirksville, MO(Zone 5a)

My coneflowers did this last year and I thought something was wrong with them. I've had the same bed for about 8 years and this was the first year they 'mutated!' If only I'd known ... $22.00 a plant! LOL

(Zone 5a)

GW if you ever decide to devide it please keep me in mind, it is lovely. I am sure I can find something that you would like to trade for.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, I don't have one, Kit. I *wish*! Nellie, if it does it again, try to mark the plant so you can divide the roots and see if the divisions do it, too. That'd be cool. :)
