Plant orders are arriving!

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm SO excited. I've had two orders come in yesterday. One for hardy figs and the other for water lotus! YIPPE.... Today should bring another fig order and my Heronswood order. Yes, I got a little crazy over the winter ordering. HATE to see my credit card bill this month! OUCH

Anyone else getting plants in? How many other folks went crazy ordering mail order this season?

IF you are counting the co-ops-then maybe i went a LITTLE crazy too! ;) besides co-ops i did order a flat from green mountain transplants, and a fountain butterfly bush from Jackson & perkins,Roses from wayside, perennials from Hallsons, and more daylilies from a private grower here in Michigan! >:-)Maybe some Ive forgoten! ;)
Darn LONG cold WINTER thats the problem! We are under a snow storm advisory till saturday and then the sun comes out on Sunday(suppose to)and then the temps drop again! We are looking at 40s for highs n 20s for lows at list for this n next week!!!!

OH BOTHER!!!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Hmmm, well let's see. First there were the seed orders (Park, JL Hudson, Pinetree, Baker Creek, Tom Clothier....) And the resulting seedlings that filled up countles flats.

There there were the daylilies I ordered along with everyone else's. And in a last-minute frenzy, I placed orders with Forestfarm and Bluestone, both of which arrived SUPER quick (less than a week for both!) And I couldn't resist a couple boxes of caladiums and hosta at Sam's (heaven help me if they mark 'em down - I don't think I'm strong enough to resist!!!)

Now the question is: where to put all the babies???? My greenhouse was pretty well full already with seedlings and wildflowers going to their new home this spring. Oh well, it's only a tight squeeze for another couple weeks until the threat of frost is past. Wohoo!!!!!

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

notmartha- shhhhh don't remind me about the co-ops. Terry, I'm still waiting on that wildflower co-op, LOL.... I'm also wondering where I'll put everything this season. Isn't that half the fun?

Here is one of the orders! I actually got one other in today. I'm taking pictures to compare size and quality of plants. FIRST order opened.

Heronswood order

There was a problem with a plant and Heronswood called me twice to fix it. Can't beat that, huh? Still not happy with their shipping prices.

Here is my second order. Free shipping was included in the deal. Shipping total was 26.00! Plants are larger and packing was better. I love this company.

Side by side comparison of plants.

Plant on left is from Heronswood, one on the right is from Naylor Creek.

I went nuts and ordered 20 new roses from Heirloom Roses. Well 5 are minatures, 3 are for a friend, 2 are for my parents, and one is sold out. So I bought 1 climber called Compassion and the rest are either Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, or Buck Hardy. I love roses and had many grafted roses die because we had a bad summer last year. I am counting on these ones to be tougher - I have read that these roses are tough, but they arrive in a tiny shape. I expect them the first week of May and cannot wait! Ordered them last month.

Yes, I'm expecting a number of plants to arrive from three different suppliers (yes, ouch on the credit card). I've got this weekend and next weekend to plant them, so keep your garden-gloved fingers crossed that everything arrives before Monday, April 14.

I'll also go down the Farmers' Market at Union Square to get some annuals to fill-in some bare spots.

I can't WAIT to get my hands dirty.

Enjoy spring, everyone.

Gee, DD, the difference is amazing! Martha Stewart has a show on Heronswood Nursery that I've seen a couple of times and have always thought about ordering from there. But now that I see your pictures, it doesn't seem as great as Martha makes it seem. The differences in nurseries is really interesting. Especially in their packaging.

Is the free shipping still offered? I went to the website, but didn't see anything about free shipping. Maybe you had to order early?

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

roshana, you need to order early (January)for the Naylor Creek free shipping. Even without free shipping this nursery is always my first choice. These two guys just can't be beat!
My big issue with Heronswood is their shipping charges, not the plants. To the east coast I only have one shipping option, 2nd day air. My shipping alone was 32.00. I'm happy with the plants I recd. Yes, they are a bit smaller but have nice root systems. I think the prices I paid were resonable(except one or two of them) and Heronswood plant selection can't be beat! But shipping will really get you if you live on the other coast.
I've recently meet and traded plants with a gal who lives 15 minutes from there. So she's offered to pick up the plants and ship them to me. YEAH!!! Wish I new her before I placed my order. So hopefully I'll be able to continue to order some hard to find plants and save a bit on the shipping.

Annei.......don't give up on the roses from Heirloom...as their roses are mostly own root! ******** which really means is they are grown from cuttings and should they eventually die back or to the ground, they pretty much always come back and are stronger for it! Get yourself over to our Rose Forum...it's fun! even though you are in zone 5, you can still grow roses! Elaine

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Agreeing with RoseElaine about Heirloom roses. Check out the rose I got from them a few years ago. When it arrived, it had one stem, about 6" tall. This is when the rose was 3 years old:

Own-root roses are a whole lot hardier than grafted, plus you don't get the disease transferrence that the rootstock is prone to have. I don't even have to mulch mine for winter!

I just received two "Nigra" Figs from Park Seeds. I couldn't resist because they were on SALE! They are in 1 quart size pots. Not the biggest plants, but they'll grow.

Hopefully, my Hosta order from Naylor Creek will be coming very soon. I took advantage of their January sale too!

Heronswood Nursery was always a favorite of mine, but I haven't ordered from them this year because their shipping charges are too high! It seems that all the nurseries are charging very high prices for shipping & handling. Heronswood Nursery is not alone.....add Forestfarm Nursery, Joy Creek Nursery, and many others! If I can't find the plant in a nursery closer to me, then I figure it wasn't meant to be.

Hey Shirley1MD! I also purchased one of the Nigra Figs from Parks. Does yours have buds on it? Mine is looking kind of sad.
