Is it safe to dig up a cherry tree while in bloom?

My neighbor has several small cherry trees that I have been wanting to get, she said I could have them but I don't know when I should dig them up? Some are so small that they aren't blooing yet because of their age, but others are in bloom. When is the best time to dig and move them over here? The tallest one is only about 3' tall.

I have always been told that you can dig or transplant a tree during any month that has a R in the name. This is ApRil...wonder what I should do??

MOLLYBEE, don't they bloom BEFORE they completely leaf out? So, I would say get them, and get them fast!!! They are only in bloom a very short while, so it is not like you will really mess up the blooming season. This would probably be your best time to move them (with as much root ball as possible) until they are dormant in the fall.

Thanks John,
I noticed today that they are leafing out on the smaller ones. And yes they do bloom before they leaf out, I was mainly worried about the cherries that would be forming on them also.
Guess I will get dh to go over tomorrow and dig them up. I think there are about 5 in all, and only 2 of them are big enough to bloom.
Wish us luck!! I just love cherries fresh off the tree!

MOLLYBEE, your plan sounds good. However, I was thinking they were ornamental cherries, about all that we grow up here. I'd still move them right now, but wouldn't be surprised if your first crop of fruit would be next year. Good luck!!!

Dh went over and got them this morning. Already have them planted, and so far so good none of them have even wilted!
Thanks for your help!
