Homemade Trellis or Support Structure Photos, anyone?

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

I would love to see what people are doing for making their own homemade (or purchased) trellis structures.

In the gourd forum, there have been some clever structures described, but I almost need a picture to put it together in my mind.

If you've put something together that does the job AND if you have a picture, would you mind sharing it here?

This is a 4-sided trellis. Drill holes in the bottom of the legs to accept rebar for stability.

I haven't wheedled a trellis out of DH and DS...yet. But here are some that are along the lines of what I hanker fer: http://www.gardendesigncompany.com/ or one of these, minus the planter box: http://store.yahoo.com/plansnow/twistcloser.html

Thanks for the web sites Terry! I am not at all bashful about copying wood creations from a photo. Lots of good suggestions.

Terry, I cant believe you shared this url, just yeatrday I was searching all over the net for pergola plans! ...with
little luck. And ow you just pointed me to it! Thanks, now not only are are a potential saint but you are a psychic too! LOL.

Thanks, Lavanda

(Hmmmm....I'm thinkin' psychic and saint are pretty much mutually exclusive, lolol!)

But I'm glad I could help. I haven't gotten too worked up about my trellis, but now that I finally ordered "THE" Clematis that needs the support, I suppose it's time to get a move on.

nothing clever here -just a simple frame of 2x6 lumber bolted together. 7'high x8'wide by4'deep open areas covered with lattice. Last year we severely pruned the silverlace vine, painted the wood parts dark green and replaced the wood lattice with white vinyl. It will grow back in a year or two.

Hey Y'all,

I just finished the chores for the day and logged back on to check DGs one last time! What an awesome surprise to find these pictures ~ thanks so much for sharing!!!

We have a deck to which I would love to add some type of vine growing structure including a very open (lattice type) top. It will have to be designed from scratch though, in order to be tailored to what's already there.

I would love to see others still ~ this is a lot of fun!

Mwhit, Notmartha & Golddog, I'm hoping to be as creative and successful as you! It's a job that you all have done so well.

Again, thanks for sharing the pictures of your well earned efforts :)

This is one that we made using PVC pipe.

In the back ground you can also see the very top of one of 4 of the garden olelisk that we have as well

The vine pole that we also made; which I have 2 of. One in the front yard and one in the back

Have 2 of these as well but these we bought. Have 1 at the end of the house going to the back yard and one up front at the end of our walk-way coming up to the house.

CoCo, was the vine pole your own creation? That's beautiful especially with the ground design around it.

Which vines do you typically grow on each of these (including the olelisk?) I'll bet your property is just gorgeous with everthing in full growth!

This arch and fence was made by a dear friend. It is the entrance to the backyard. I stained it white. It is made of pine and needs staining again to prolong it's life. I have an identical one on the other side of the house. He said it was just as easy to do two as one. Thanks goodness for friends like that. I had to promise to make him Biscotti for the rest of our lives.

Here's one I made myself out of leftover pruning wastes. I don't get trash pickup and have to do something with the stuff too big to compost. It is way in the background. I add to it every year, winding grapevines into it and propping it up with more supports as the old rot away.

trillium_girl, didn't see the arbor til I moved the page to the right. Very nice!!

They're all so great! CoCo - are the posts running through the vine pole metal?

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

this is one made out of the cherry tree that fell over-I took it down and replaced it with a garden gate now!

trillium_girl, that is a great inspiration for me! I've been trimming dogwood bushes that have crimson red color thin branches. I thought maybe I could somehow incorporate them into an arbor or something (DH eyes were rolling!). Now, I know I'm not going to throw them away! I've several more bushes to prune and I just love the fact that you did that :)

Notmartha, the cherry tree is an awesome use of resources, too! What a great luck that you could still enjoy the tree in a new way.

dohopp; no, they are from 3/4 inch dowels but they do not go all the way through the pole. A hole is drilled on each side with 6 inches of dowel put in.
This last year I had morning glories and cardinal vine climbing up on vine pole and climbing roses on the garden obelisks.

I forgot that I also have a Clematis growing on the vine pole in the back yard.

Oh, we have the same red-twig dogwoods, Morph. They would make nice wreaths, too. Hmmmm...Would look pretty on our white front door, actually!

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Thanks, CoCo :)

GW, yes, wreaths would look very nice! I'd love to thatch our deck arbor top with these if we get to make one this year.

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

CoCo, I'm going to make some vine poles this year, since I've gone vine crazy! I've also seen them with copper tubing instead of dowels, and somewhere I saw one that had a pot attached to the top with petunias in it.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

hey i have a metal pole that was a sunglasses display holder.
I never thought of vines-THANKS CoCo

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

All of you are SO innovative and inspiring! Now I'm looking at trees to prune and "junk" in the garage to try and get creative with. This site ROCKS!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

This is a trellis built by the fellow who works for me. It is a south edge of largest of my two lily pools. Inside and under the trellis is a swing seat. Grapes and a Clematis montana grow on west end, Clematis The President grows on the east end. Donna

This is another view of the trellis arbor, sure is nice to sit there and watch the fish, and in the fall the grapes smell wonderful and taste good too. Donna

That is the prettiest spot - what a view! Looks like you've got that picture posting down pat, too, Donna. :)

Morph; I'm sorry. We have plans for the vine pole; wasn't our own inspiration.

Coco, what about your Obelisk? post a picture of that...
It is absolutely to die for...
