What can I say I am on a moving spree.. Can I move a very small Burning bush right now? One reason I want to move it is because the ants have moved in a little too close to it and I know it wont be long til they kill it. The bush in question is only about 8" tall right now and has just started budding out.
Thanks in advance.
Burning bush question
I would go ahead and do it. This is unofficial advice, but as long as you are swift and careful and tend to it after its moved, it should be fine.
Of course you could just get rid of the ants...
Good luck,mig
Actually getting rid of the ants is a much harder job than moving the bush. These are fire ants, and so far I haven't ever been able to get rid of them no matter what other folks have told me to do...they always come back. These kind of ants have been known to kill hugh full grown trees! So I didn't want to take any chances with this little bush.
Thanks for your help.
Thank God I live up north...Thank God I live up north...Thank God I live up north...
Fire ants! Yipe! Yipe!
Really! I hate these things!! They simply take over and kill just about everything. We have had 3 lumbardy popular trees(sp?) to be killed by fire ants and several plum trees. and who knows how many plants and bushes I have lost because of them.
We have tried every thing that we can think of to get rid of these things...and they just up and move their hills to another spot in the yard!
I didn't know they killed plants - just thought they had nasty bites. Man, that stinks. Have you contacted your local county extension agency? http://www.griffin.peachnet.edu/ga/carroll/ (warning - loud midi music you can't turn off!)

Mollybee, I moved a "dwarf" burning bush because it was getting too big. It was about 3 feet tall. I got tired of pruning it to be a dwarf with a natural look. Anyway it survived fine except I moved to the lower (think wild) part of my yard the the deer have kept it pruned so well that it is truly a dwarf now. They are tough.
About those ants, I have to repeat the refrain TG I live up North.

try planting wormwood [artemisia {sp}] it deters ants. it is nearly impossible to get rid of ants but u can keep control with wormwood and Diazinon. early in the morning place some diazinon where there is an ant nest... of course once they detect the diazinon,, they will find another site to move into. somehow i planted wormwood in front and back of the house. i do not see them near the house. only far away from the backyard, where i hardly go to. but i do keep 'watching' where they move, and apply diazinon granules. somehow there are more ants in the neighbor's yard than ours.
before u dig the burning bush, be sure to 'flood' the surrounding area with water so there will be less damage on the roots. that is what i did when i moved the burning bush i have. flooding with water, made it easier to dig and hardly any damage to the plant. hth.
I'd wait until it stops burning before attempting to move it.
HMMMM burning bush - fire ants...
I would go ahead and move them, I have moved mine and they survived. of course, if you can do it while in dormancy, and be sure to water it in well, and maybe some vit. b for she stress
O yes GW, Our County Extention office is well aware of the fire ant problems! Not alot can be done that hasn't already been done though. Thanks for the links, I'll go read up on them shortly.
Trillium, I think I am going to get this little bush moved this weekend(been feeling a little under the weather past couple of days)
Thanks Mavie, I don't think I have ever seen or heard of Wormwood. I done a search, but couldn't find any good pics of it. I just might be willing to try it though. Did you buy plants or did you plant seeds for this wormwood? Would like to know more. Thanks!
John! You crazy thang you!!
I don't know why I didn't see that one coming!
Pebble, LOL Yea and actually these 2 bushes aren't that old and they've only been planted for 1 year now...so maybe the root system wont be too large.
Thank ya'll!!!

i can trade some cuttings of wormwood for some pink moon vine cuttings or seed. lmk. wormwood is so easy to grow from cuttings. just stick on the ground and it will grow. once roots develops, it is on its own to grow. plus i love the fragrance of the leaves. warning though, it is poisonous. plant by itself in an area... the leaves and the whole plant makes a lovely statement growing on its own.
Thanks Mavie ;)
You've got mail.
Molly,
I keep Diazanon granules (sp)? around all the bases of all my trees and shrubs, and broadcast thru my flower beds... It only kills a few of the ants, but at least they will move away from the plants..Than's about all you can do..I do this every couple of weeks. I have a lot of territory to cover, but it doesn't take much to make them move, and saves the plants.
Larkie
Larkie,
if u find where the nest of the ants is... where they emerge from the ground. be sure to drop about a tablespoon of the Diazinon granules. u will see they will move elsewhere. that is how those pesky ants move away. i mean move LOL!!!! so far ants never bothered or interfer with my plants.
No problem finding the beds here MaVie, they are usually about 2 ft. + high & just as wide Good old Pissants, they never let you down....LOL..I dose the beds and keep it broadcast on all the plants, shrubs and trees..Only way to keep them from killing plants..So I keep them on the move..
Larkie
funny, i just pour some on their nest and they do not 'loiter' anywhere else. so my plants are safe. maybe cause the soil here is desert sand. they only emerge from their nest and move around elsewhere. or could it be because the wormwood scent make them 'drunk" LOL.
