Garden Huckleberries

Stormstown, PA(Zone 6a)

I'm not sure where to post this question, so please forgive me if this is the wrong forum.

Is anyone familiar with garden huckleberries? I bought 2 different types, garden and chichiquelite. Well, I've done a search on the second, and every source I've found says it's poisionous. I know that the garden variety also warns in many places that it still is, but it's not, but what about the chichiquelite? ALL sources say it is. Please, someone here give me a little reassurance on this, as I'd hate to have poisioned my family with a pie!!!

I found this from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds:

GARDEN HUCKLEBERRY- #177 (Solanum melanocerasum) Large purple berries, that are delicious cooked and sweetened, (do not eat raw)! Great in pies, Huge yields of fruit all summer long. Plant 14" apart. Strong tall plants do not have to be staked. Grow plants like you start peppers, great for any one wanting quick easy berries, and a huge yield. Originated in Africa.

Pkt(35 seeds)$1.25

CHICHIQUELITE - #178 (Solanum nigrum) Sweet purple berries are great fresh or cooked, they are much like "Wonderberry" but larger and it gives heavy yields. Very easy to grow, start and plant like peppers plants, just 75 days to fruit!

Bump

I just got a seed packet of the Chichiquelite this spring, from Baker Creek.

Did you like them?

I grew garden huckleberries last year. I tasted them right off the plant and did not get sick at all. I made jam from them and my children raved so much about it that I ordered seeds this year from Sandhill Preservation to plant. My kids asked me to make more jam.

Good to know. I got 1 tiny seedling growing. I might have to plant it in a pot and take it in this fall till it fruits. I'm thinking it takes a long growing season.

I think your tiny seedling will produce this summer without taking it in. These plants are so easy. I didn't do hardly anything to them. They reseed.

You are a lot colder than me, so we'll see what happens. I'm anxious to taste them.

I personally did not like the taste right off the vine. But when you add sugar to them, it brings out a berry taste. You can make syrup and jam.
