Mint to deter flies?

Is it true that a few potted mint plants will keep flies from coming into the house in the summer? Any type? spearmint, peppermint? lemon mint, chocolate mint? when I was a kid we had spearmint growing in the lawn- oh, it would smell great when we would mow over it!!

Tansy is a good deterrent too. Mice hate the smell of mints, esp. peppermint.
