Soil additives to prevent fungus & deter destructive bugs?

Does anyone know of a good product or substance that I can till into my garden soil to help prevent fungus and/or the chewy bugs? I fought both of these with my gourds last year and I was hoping to get a head start on these problems by adding something to the soil in advance this year.

Is there anything on the market to help with either of these problems at the root cause (pun intended :)
