Have photos always been made into bitmaps on DG, or is that something new? I noticed that when I went to download a picture - it was in .bmp format and a pretty large file. Just curious!
File format of photos
That one started as a TIF
I've noticed the same thing, gardenwife, and I thought it was some glitch in my system. I used to be able to download a photo anywhere on the net as a jpg, but not any more. I assume it is some copyright guard on most sites. I can, however download as a bmp., then open it with a right click to preview and save it as a jpg... go figure! However, I find I can also right click on a web image and copy it, then paste it to a document. I keep a catalogs of plant info, so pics really help when I'm trying to identify something or compare it.
Actually, I wasn't just talking about your picture, Root - this has happened on others. It doesn't happen on other sites for me, Weez - just here. Do you notice it other places?
Yes, other places, as well. When I first started using the new computer with XP, I could hold the curser over a photo and a cluster of icons would appear in the upper left hand corner of the picture. One of the options was to Save, and when I clicked on that, a window offered me the option of saving it in jpg. Now I no longer have that option. It just allows for bmp. That's why I thought it was my computer system or one of the downloaded changes to XP. Now that you have mentioned it, I think it's something else. I was able to download jpg from one site since then, and it was Australian... strange, eh?
I only post jpg format but if I right click to copy one it comes back as a bitmap. I noticed it a while back but figured it has something to do with the new server.
OK, that's three of us, so it has to be some copyguard on the pics. Strange. Any ideas, GW?
I was downloading pictures for our catalog last night. 3 or 4 different sites, all were jpg. Tried here and they all said bitmap.
ßernie
me too
Would someone point me directly to a picture that you see is a bitmap, so I can investigate?
Dave
it's when we go to save them, dave.
That's your browser doing it. All images (capital ALL) are stored in JPEG format here at DG. I don't do bitmaps.
Dave
You also can't see the size of a picture..
dave, do you know the settings to change it? I can always save as bitmap and convert, but would rather not if someone can point me in the right direction:)
I don't know, tiG. My browser doesn't make assumptions for me (it doesn't convert to anything else when I save it, thus I save them as jpeg).
Further, I don't use Windows so I have no way to test and figure out the way around it. I'd figure Gardenwife is your best bet. :)
dave
Well,I put in a couple of pictures last night, they were long panaramas,I hope it didn't cause a problem, won't do it again,GW said they may not be viewable by dail up members,so sorry.
Is this the problem where you can't save an image as anything but a .bmp?
If it is, it's a Microsoft problem with any operating system newer than Win98 (I encountered it because I was working on two PC's, one of which still uses Win98, the other one is XP - I can choose the file format on the older PC, but not the newer one.)
I can't find the service info on their site anymore, but they used to have a blurb that said basically they've known it's a problem for several years, and they don't know when they'll fix it. Grrrrrr.
right, it doesn't give any choice but bitmap. thanks go_vols, maybe someone can find if they fixed it.
okay, I just tried saving something on another site and it let me save as jpg. wonder what's up?
Perhaps it is something one one of their recent Windows updates, because I routinely saved photos from DG as jpg's until just recently (like, maybe a month ago). I can still save images from other sites as jpg's, just not at DG. I'm using XP - don't have a Windows 98 or 2000 box around to experiment with.
GW, I just tried saving photos here on Dave's and I'm only offered btmp, so I tried several other sites on the web, and I am now allowed the option of jpg or btmp. I'm operating Windows XP, and until today, btmp was my only option anywhere for several months. I've been getting automatic Windows updates when I log on in the morning for the last few days. They must be making changes to affect this. Why I can't save pics from DG in jpg is a mystery to me.
I'm windows 98 and have never had any trouble saving pictures as jpegs. I just tried to save one from here and the only option was btmp. When I click on the properties of the picture it says it's a jpeg file....
hmmm....the plot thickens! This is very interesting!
Yes, Shoe, the thot plickens indeed!
I have 98 and also Win2K on my puter. I opened 98 to see what would happen and still got bitmap (and also clicking a pic and properties it showed jpg there). Who knows what is goin on, I certainly don't. But it sure is a curiosity, eh?
Ok,I'm new to this so don't laugh too hard, what do you all mean by saving pics here?
Alright, tomorrow I'll boot up my laptop (which has Windows 98) and see how it looks for me.
Question: What browser are you all using? Are you all using Internet Explorer? What version?
dave
Just for the record, I'm running on Windows98 and can save any picture from any website as jaypeg except from Dave's Garden. That one is bumps only.
HAH...we got the better of dave's curiosity! He can't STAND stuff like this! :>) (You know it's true, dave!)
I have IE 5 I believe....I've never upgraded to IE6. IE5 works great for me!
Runnin XP,bumps here.
XP, IE 6, bitmaps only and used to be able to save here as jpgs. Can save at other places as jpg.
This should help: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q260650
Why ONLY Dave's then?
BTW Anyone having IE5! If it works, don't fix it. IE6 is deadly for many!
WinXP, IE6
'Save As' only gives me the option of saving as bmp. 'Copy' will copy and paste as a jpeg into photoshop or other photo editors.
Using 2k pro.
IE 6 Win XP. I can save pictures from other sites as jpg's too, but not from daves.
I noticed this right after we changed servers. I use Windows ME and Internet explorer. This does not happen on other sites so I assumed it was tied into the new server and it was no big deal. But if it isn't caused by the server or site it is a mystery and I can't stand a mystery left unsolved! But unlike Dave, I have no clue how to solve the mystery. So I will keep reading this thread and hope it is solved....cause I do not think the butler did it!
On the site Go_vols linked, it says,"This issue can occur when you connect to a Web site using an address that contains . For example, the server is accessed through http:///default.htm, instead of http:///default.htm."
The fact that we are members to the site and have user passwords may be the reason that the pics on Dave's only save as btmps.
Weez, that didn't come through so I'm pasting witha a space so it will show.
http: // username:password@site>/ default.htm,
instead of http: // / default.htm.
Our password isn't in the site address, although knowing windows it could still be the reason. If I can copy and paste that works for me. I need to retrieve my pictures sometimes and even converting wasn't too terrible.
Curious - my Windows laptop is doing the same thing. Now, this laptop has run the same version of Windows (Windows 98) since 1999, and I have never upgraded the Internet Exploiter.
And it's not at all just DG. I went to gardenweb.com and tried to save his logo - same exact thing. NOAA is working fine, however. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/data/forecasts/TXZ186.php?warncounty=TXC265&city=Kerrville
This is definitely a bug in Internet Explorer, and I feel better knowing that DG is not the only site affected. There's nothing I can do here - Microsoft simply needs to fix this.
If anyone knows of a server-based workaround, let me know. I won't be spending too much time on this (I've killed dozens of hours in the past trying to work around silly MS bugs).
Dave
