I have discovered that if I cut the end off an egg carton, leaving only 10 depressions rather than 12, I can fit 5 of them into a seed flat. This allows me to start seeds with different germination rates in the same flat and be able to remove a carton when its time to pot up without having the remainder of the tray left vacant and using space on the light shelf. I also number the cartons along the center (laundry marker) with the date and tray number which I enter into my journal. That way I always know what is in which tray. I punch holes in the side of the egg cup near the bottom for drainage. Works great! Saves on cell tray cost.
Egg carton seed trays
I guess soo Padre...How many seeds are you planning on starting anyway? you have enough there for a million of them. Good luck, and dont forget to punch little drainage holes. The ones that are made of carton, are good too becaue you can plant those right in the soil, but these styrofoan ones doen biodegrade. so you will have to transplant them into either something larger or directly into the ground.
Very good, Padre!

Neaaaaat Work!
Something else you can do is use the plastic tubs that ground beef comes in. Three will fit in one of the holders. They make great seed starting trays for when you want to start a lot of plants.
This is best for the plants that have to be repotted before you set them outside anyway. You can start several hunderd in the trays, where usually it would only hold 72.Saves lots of room and they're free too.
I use those too mel. I hated when our meat started coming like that, but I love the trays. Disinfect good, and I'm rolling. I just need to use more meat:)
where did you get all those egg cartons from????!!!Let me in on your secret! I need egg cartons to sell my eggs in....hey, i gotta an idea...i'll send you empty flats and 4 inch pots for egg cartons..grin!
Sounds like a deal to me, Lisa! LOL..........I love how you always find the bargains and barter! Inventive gal that you are!
