Onions and Seed starter medium

Lexington, NC(Zone 7a)

I know its late but thats me. LOL I have grow lights and am about to start onion seed in one tray, 1 1/2 inch units all made of plastic. I have Jiffy starter mix but wondered whether I should add anything to it like worm castings to add some fertilizer. Not right where I can check it now but think there is a 120 units in a tray.

If it were me, I'd put the onion seed in something that has a lot of depth. They put out some really long roots and they need them to hold the onions upright. I usually do mine in 4-6 inch pots and let them grow in a clump until I'm ready to transplant to the garden. By growing close together, they help hold each other upright. When they get really tall, I just give them a hair cut and they don't seem to mind. Only down to about 5 inches though. I do water with fertilized water after they come up. Remember, onions like it cool. Mine did best last year outside on the days and nights that it didn't go below freezing. This is just how I do it. There are probably a dozen different methods of doing just about everything. Have fun. Don't you just love those fresh green onions? I can hardly wait.

Thanks Brugie, Will try your way, sounds logical and yes I love fresh green onions.

Sparks: Roger Swain once did a Victory Garden segment on this very thing. All he used were standard cell-packs and soiless mix to start the seed. He'd put one seed in each cell. Basically, the system you came up with.

Brugie: I'm on an alliums forum at another site, and would like to quote you above. Would that be alright? Sounds like a great system, and I'd like to share it with the other allium growers there.

Speaking of Roger Swain...what happened to him? He is no longer on the Victory Garden. Does anyone know why he was replaced?
