I picked a seed pod (Chilopsis linearis) in New Mexico and now have 5 little plants. Has anybody tried to grow it in the south east?
I'm thinking about planting it in a raised mound to keep it from getting wet feet in our heavy rains.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Dessert Willow in GA?
I got some seeds from Roadrunner last time she was here. I just started them (they are up fine!) so, like you, this will be my first yr with them. Will just have to keep in touch and see how these "projects" turn out, k?
I was gonna either make sure the tree was planted in well-drained soil or perhaps on a slight hill so the excess water runs off.
(Sure have some pretty flowers, don't they?)
Yes, the flowers are amazing. The flowers on the tree I took the pod from was purple with some white streaks.
I have been able to find out so far that it likes limestone soil and good drainage. that's why I'm thinking about putting it on a hill, and I will probably add some gravel to the soil, and definitely lime.
I would like to compare notes as they grow, mine are only 1 1/2 inch tall so far, and I'm scared to water them. I wiped out half of the seedlings by watering too much when they first came up, only the ones around the edge of the pot made it. Five should be enough though.
