Asiatic Lily Question

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I was recently asked for information concerning how to grow an Asiatic lily indoors. My gut feeling is that it would not adapt well to an indoor climate, but I could be wrong. This is a blooming plant in a pot that was a gift. The recipient hasn't anywhere outdoors to keep it. Any suggestions?

Seems we've had the same email WZ

The Asiatics will flower indoors once but an indoor situation will not give the Lily the cold winter dormancy they require to bloom again. Apart from getting a deep window box and hanging them outside, I've no suggestions.

Perhaps they have access to an outdoor shed or similar where they can place the pot over winter?

Like tulips for forcing--store in the fridge from Dec-Mar or a garage--any place that is fairly cold for those months. I don't know if she is in an apartment or not--as the other poster said do a window box.

Thanks, you two. All good points. I've sent them on to the person asking... didn't know if you'd responded yourself yet, Baa.

A friend of mine puts his lily-pots out on the balcony from November, and leaves them there throughout the winter. He then brings them inside when they have had a real good freeze.

It works that way.

they could always use the trunk of there car for winter dormancy, unless of course they don't have winter. :)
