Spring bulbs!

Oakland, CA(Zone 9b)

Last year we were late getting some bulbs in so my gardener warned me they might not bloom until the next year. The glads and dahlias did come up, but the freesias never did. It was a little disappointing -- not much, the box of bulbs was el cheapo quality and price -- but I figured it was no biggie deal, live and learn.

But sure enough, the freesias threw up leaves in December and have started blooming! I have always loved their fragrance and now have freesias in several vases, scenting the air. This is very exciting for a newbie gardener, flowers in vases that I didn't have to go out and buy!

There are even some tulips and anemones popping up. I didn't plant many so it will be interesting to see which ones decided to grow.

Now, if only those new dahlias and canna lilies will come up, I'd be a happy puppy. Even my clematis jackmannii has stuck a few stems out of the ground, since we had that weird six-week spell of sunshine all through January.

This is cruel and unusual punishment for those of us in the North to read in the dark depth of February. :-)

MY gardener is ME! And sometimes a Black Russian Terrier pup who is always willing to help dig up bulbs (I suppose in case I "lost" them)

Extra cruel! We just got another 6" of snow last night!!!!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Doubly cruel!! We have over 1 ft. of snow, which is now on top of several inches already there. Another foot or 2 is forecasted before it all ends sometime tomorrow!!! It should be very interesting later this week when it begins melting....FLOODS???

And here we are in southern Arizona where bulbs start blooming in October and here we are in July and the dalihas are going full force. Amarillas blooms twice here. November and March. The problem I have is that the bulb catalogs always get the blbs here at the wrong time and if i plant them in the spring, they won't bloom for a year. When the bulbs do "come to town" I'm lucky to get what I need If I can fight the Madness to get to them!!
