A couple of weeks ago, when the snow was temporarily gone, I was working in the back, and could definitely smell skunk under the deck. I thought they hibernated in the winter? It was mid 40's that day.
There are lots of vermin (moles, voles, grubs) around for them to eat, but I don't want a den of baby skunks in the backyard!!! Trap 'em or wait till they move out on their own?
Skunk :(
You could call animal exterminators and possibly get them out before you have lots of them under there. A friend of ours had a skunk spray under the house and had to move out for a few days. All their clothes, carpets, furniture and everything smelled skunky even when they were able to return.
Skunks are bad news. They not only stink, but they can also carry rabies. Had a mother and babies try to set up house in our yard in an old tree hollow when I was a youngster. Dad went out and took care of the mom and 14 babies with a shovel. Incidently, he did get sprayed, but only because the wind shifted direction. Recommend you contact your local Animal Services/Animal Control unit. They should be able to help.
I contacted the Department of Natural Resources. They told us to leave them alone -- only if they were inside a building should they be removed. The smell still lingers, no idea if the animal(s) are still there. Since the area is about 100' from our house, the wildlife people recommend leaving the animals alone. Only box-type traps are permitted for use in our town, absolutely no other type of control is allowed, and an animal-removal company quoted us $2000 to get rid of them. Whew!
Forgive me here, but THAT STINKS!
Surely you could do something to make it inhospitable to them, what about turning the hose on em?
