I've used strawberry plants as edging around a perennial bed, and I think it looked pretty nice :)

They will send out runners, so you'll have lots of baby plants by July or August.

Pick off the berries this year to encourage the plants to put energy into their roots.

Nancy,

strawberries produce a lot of runners to form new strawberry plants... which is why i would suggest to plant them on their own space. u will have plenty of strawberries in no time. good luck.

do not plant them on any unedible plants. the bird of paradise is poisonous... that is if it is caesalpinia variety.

so them i guess i will put them in my veggie garden i am making a few of those beds into perennial beds thanks ma vie. and thank you vols i have a few strawberries starting in the pots i will go pinch them off.

In the hot south, you might want to provide some light afternoon shade for your strawberries, especially the ones that bear during the summer. Otherwise they get kind of dry (the fruit, I mean).

I planted a dozen regular strawberry plants a few years ago, and decided I liked the alpines a lot better. Last fall I dug up and gave away 100+ regular strawberry plants :) They sure do multiply!

thanks for the link ma vie. and lupinlover thank you that was another thought i did not think about. now i am in the same boat as i was in when i wrote this post lol. where am i going to put these guys? i guess it will take more thought and another bed on the south side of my house with some afternoon shade i'm sure this texas sun will dry them out but good.

Nancy,

i planted some of mine last year in the veggie garden. the peppers and eggplant were tall enough to give them shade. am sure u will find a suitable space for them. push come to shove, if planted in full sun, just be mindful of the fruits as they ripen... pick them right away or someone with wings will surely beat u to the fruits.

do you think they would do well in my asperagus patch?

give a few plant a shot, and see how they will interact with one another. besides still too early to get them planted now. i am not too familiar with ur area. here we still have danger of frost until March.

Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

i think our frost is done for this area. i see buds popping out of everything. i have had the plants outside and moved into unheated hoophouse when we did have frost. but i will plant a few put and save a few back until i am sure it is really springtime here.

how lucky u are. 2 weeks ago we had frost galore. now we are flooded and the rain never stopped yet from the weekend. very rare to have rain here. accdg to the weather news, we are in the midst of El Nino. hope the rain stops though. don't get me wrong, i love the rain, but not when water from the street comes into the yard. lucky the house is on elevated ground.

Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

i hear that on the rain. i would like it to rain all summer but give us a break for a few weeks now so we can get our tilling done. when we walk across the yard we sink.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

LOL Nancy :)! i hope that does not happen to me next week ... if and when the rain stops so i can till some parts of the ground. hopefully to be able to send some plants out too, as soon as rain stops. perhaps Tues. cause Mon. post office will be close.
