I saw in the PDB that several of you have grown these (a.k.a. Asarina scandens). Mighty purty! And the flowers look every bit as beautiful as the Cobea to me!
Question is (Dave, PoppySue, others), do you remember when the blooms started coming on? Please tell me they don't take as long as Cobea (Cathedral Bells)!
I understand these will bloom most of the summer, and can handle part shade so thought I'd try them around the deck this year (and also take some to the Market).
Also, do they have a fragrance? Much obliged!
? for Chickabiddy growers, please
Shoe: They don't take as long as Cobea. I plant my seeds in the greenhouse in March, and they start to bloom end of june. I am in zone 5, so you could have blooms before me. The blooms don't have an aroma, but are sure purty, along with the dainty foilage. A very strong good grower for cascading and for hanging baskets.
Well poke me in the ribs and tickle my armpits! I'm so glad to hear that I could belly-flop in a shallow crick and still roll over and laff about it!
Thanks Debby...I was hoping someone would come thru and tell me that info! Maybe I'll do some hanging baskets, too then. Do you think one plant will make a lush basket? Or should I stick 3 in there, in a triangle planting? (I have some ten inch baskets laying around!)
My seeds should arrive next wk, I'll start them when they come in.
Not sure if this is applicable to you Shoe but the main problem here with the Asarina (and it's very close rellies) is that they don't flower all that well. Leaves are attractive though
Shoe: At least 3 plants to a basket. They are very dainty when seedlings, but get very lush growth quickly. My Mother has these planted in a brick planter and they cascade beautifully over it all the way to the ground. Her planter is about 3 ft. tall. Hers were the light Mystic Pink that I grew from seeds and she fertilized and they were full of blooms and the planter is facing west, so they can take the sun and heat off the brick.
Baa, that describes the Cobaea scandens I grew out last yr. (They eventually flowered in late late summer, had very pretty foliage also.)
Debby, glad you had good fortune with yours. Thanks for the tips! Maybe I'll do as good as you so wish me luck!
Don sent me some seeds of this; They either damped off on me when I transplanted them or maybe I pressed the soil around them too hard. But I still have one that is doing good.
Was very lucky to beg Poppysue for some and am getting ready to start them. Will be more careful this round.
TLC
I'd wondered how you got on the the Cobaea, Shoe. I suppose, we don't get the heat in the early summer to bring on the flowers quite so well in either plant.
Baa, I started them daggum Cobaea in the FAll of the the previous yr, around Oct/Nov. They eventually sprouted, then seemed to just hunker down waiting for special words, massage, snacks/goodies to feed on, and weather that was "to their liking". Talk about fickle! Sheesh, sheesh, and mercy me! I had about 100 pots of them growing and it became like The Little Shop of Horrors in the greenhouse! I had to trim the vines back from time to time in order for me to safely walk inside (and be able to make it back out alive!).
Then, like I said, eventually when they were planted outside for the summer, I got flowers. Altho mighty pretty, it was a long wait. I think if I ever move further south I'll try them again but, for me, I'll just admired the flowers in a picture for now.
When I saw the "chickabiddy" it reminded me of the Cobaea tho, and saw that it MAY offer its bounty to me sooner (and with less time and effort).
Wish me luck! I turn in a report at some time, 'k?
