what was your biggest planting goof up

Brooklet, GA(Zone 8a)

mine was when i did not know that cucumbers and gourds belong to the same family and i planted them on a fence together. never tasted the cukes until i had made 3 batches of pickles with them. i must admit that that was the most horrible thing i have ever tasted.

My biggest mistake was planting Goutweed in a bed with other plants..it takes over and smothers everything in its path.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

mine was not centering my sidewalk with the tree-so its kinda off a few inches. but since i started by just kicking a path in the dirt and planting plants b4 the sidewalk was in-i can live with it!
its like notmartha would do!

It sure looks pretty though!

Well, there have been a few gardening disasters in my past, but the most recent bad one was planting orange pansies in my front bed one fall, before I knew what color the azaleas were. The azaleas bloomed salmon, and that had to be the most hideous color combination I've ever seen. If I had tried to make it ugly, I couldn't have done any better, lolol!

Mine was planting perennial sweat peas in my front garden. Even though they were beautiful and long lasting they took over everywhere and now I'm fighting to get rid of them.

Many long years ago a person whom I later found out was a real air-head true blond brought me some wonderful little wild violets. I planted them and have never gotten those awful things out of my beds or lawn. I have been paying for my stupidity for lots longer than I would care to admit.

Dover, NH(Zone 5a)

Mine was playing with the seed pods from some cleome that I had planted along our back walkway. Once the pods were dried, I split them open to look inside and ended up scattering seeds all over. Now each summer, I have cleome sprouting everywhere! :)

I don't know where to start with this one! Probably the biggest problem I have is getting the spacing right. I have to remember that the plants in the nursery are usually babies, regardles of whether they are plants, shrubs, or trees. I've only been doing this for a few years, so I am learning. In the meantime, I will keep digging and moving as they grow...

Santa Clara, CA(Zone 9a)

Mine happens every year. When I visit the nursery or start seeds, my yard seems a lot larger then it is. I end up with all kinds of plants and then have to find a place for them. I've tried making lists before going to the nursery, but it's hopeless. Soon there will be no more walkways through my back yard. So I've been checking out the community garden down the street.

I've been trying to think for days about this one. I suppose that my real planting idiocy, that continues year in year out, is that I will plant out half hardys in the border and then not bring them in for winter.

Terrible habit!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

G_V, I did something almost exactly like you: I planted a bright orange oriental poppy underneath the rose 'Climbing America' which is salmon. Too horrible to look at (and I am color-blind! Really!)

My list of gardening sins is long, too. I have done almost everything everyone else has. My biggest sin, tho, has to be to plant things in the summer. There is almost always a dry spell that can easily turn into drought, and keeping things watered with mature trees is impossible! Ever try to water a 80-ft oak tree? How about 30 of them at once???
