Native Plants and Wildflowers

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Is the forum gone? I didn't see it... so I'll put my plug in here. I got a new catalog from Prairie Nursery http://www.prairienursery.com/ recently. This is a top notch catalog and filled with loads of info. If you're into natives you MUST send away for the catalog. I haven't ordered from them but I see they have a good recommendation in the GWD. What I think is especially wonderful are their lists of plants suited to you soil type... clay, sand, wet, dry.

Poppysue, thanks for posting this - Dave said if the interest for the wild plants forum revived with the spring, he would bring it back. He has them all waiting, from what he said.

Have you ever purchased from Prairie Moon Nursery? I ended up there once when looking for gentian seed. I haven't ordered any yet, but am very interested. I have closed gentian (gentiana andrewisii), but would love to have fringed gentian, too (gentiana crinita).

(oops, maybe I should read what I type before I post!!)

Just a quick vote YES, for the wild plants forum. I've gotten some of my favorites from building sites before they were dozed. Violets, clemetis viorna, trillium, jack in the pulpits, etc......

YES!!! I was wondering why there would not be a native plant and wildflower forum on a gardening site! That's what I'm most into myself. I try to limit the exotics, though there are some I just can't resist! (Azaleas, gardenias, roses...)

Can I wave both hands? Dave and Trish know how I feel about wildflowers and natives, so SURELY I can help sway the vote :)

Count me in too!!! But my idea of "wildflowers" are the shade-loving wildflowers from our native hardwood forests, not the meadow ones. I love trilliums, bloodroot, spring beauty, American ginseng, all the others. And all the violets!

I really like wild plants too. At my old place i had a nice group of trilliums, dutchman's breeches and many others in a shady place under the American Elms. Here i don't have much shade so only planted one trillium and it didn't grow. Hopefully in a couple of years I will have shade to grow the wildlings in the just being made woodland area. Rutholive

I would enjoy a wild plant forum. I found these two hiking through a seaside state park in Maine last summer. Is this a lady's slipper?

And is this a type of trillium? I can't find any specifics in my reference books. See...I could really benefit from this forum...everyone could help me identify the mysterious woodland plants I encounter! :)

Rudbeckia,

Yes, from what I can see on the first photo it is a Cyprepedium - Lady's Slipper, the second a Trillium, can't tell the species for you, maybe someone else can. You can always post these on the ID forum, that gets a wider readership.

Can't say I've missed the wildflower forum despite having a wildlife garden. I was just as guilty but it didn't seem to be used all that often and then mainly for photos. With such a diverse regional group as we have it's hard to discuss how to make an individual garden successful.

The second picture looks like Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) with some Star flowers (Trientalis borealis) at the top of the photo. It's always nice to catch the lady slippers blooming. We have a native yellow one too but you don't seem them as often as the pink.

I have to agree with Poppysue, no trilliums, but bunchberry. I'm not familiar with the star flower.

Here's a trillium

Thank you for the id! Yeah, wildflowers!

I work with wildflowers and native plants every day at my job. Some are very small but we all aren't Dolly Parton. Their beauty is still there for someone who want to take life a little slower. It also fun to find new little treasures as the season goes by.
