Lookin' for some water plants

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Yeah, I know I should post trades in the Water Gardening forum or the Plant Trading forum. But I'm not sure those who can help me would necessarily look in those forums.

I am looking for water hyacinths and/or water lettuce for postage or a trade. (A nice 1 or 2 pound mixed box would be really great!) I know some of you "deep South" folks live in areas where these plants are choking off waterways and otherwise making a nuisance of themselves.

If anyone has a desire to get rid of the excess "weeds" in your pond, lake or nearby stream please let me know. I'd really like to get them within the next few weeks, as I have a large black plastic horse trough in my GH. I can plunk them in there, and they can grow and multiply to their heart's content until it's time to set them in the pond.

I wish I could help you out bc I like both of these plants too! I've had both in the water garden but the koi eat the roots and they die. So DH put a floating basket in the pond so the fish can't get to the roots but the don't do well in there. They stay really small and eventually die. Hope you find some! Good Luck!

I bet many of the Floridian members could snatch you up some of those. Those grow all over down there.

A certain Cajun gal who hangs out around here has graciously offered to send me some the next time she goes fishin'. Thanks y'all!

Vic, maybe my dogs are part Koi? They LOVE to eat these things! Last year I overwintered a few, and within a few weeks of dropping them in the pond, I had a great number going; gave some to the neighbors, and was so proud of myself for keeping them going.

Then one day, the dogs got loose long enough to jump in and wreak havoc, and I spent the next two months coaxing a couple high-priced nursery-bought baby plants into multiplying! And my pond was pea-soup green for most of the summer. (Oooooh, I'm having flashbacks!!!)

I'd love to be able to help you Terry, but it's actually illegal for us to ship those two plants at least here in FLorida. THey are considered exotic invasives. I have seen both down in the Econolockhatchee River at the park. They are quite interesting plants. I'm not sure if other states in the south have the same regs. I know it is illegal in some other states to transport either of those two plants, but not sure which ones. I think GA might also have the same kind of law.
