Well if anything good comes of this cold hopefully it will be a decrease in the fire ants!! How I hate those little beasties. And yes,if it HAS to be this cold some snow would be fun...as long as I don't have to drive in it..been a long time, but at least now I have a 4x4. LOL Good luck all and stay warm.
It going to be in the teens in florida????
ahhh! the silver lining!
No silver lining if you lose the plants..........fireants will survive no matter what!!
"eyes"
10 degrees? Thats warm! I'd take that over our -30!
-30, that's too cold for man or beast!!
Azalea, we had -45°F in Lapland on New Year.
When y'all go past here to NotMartha's house, I am ducking!!!
Whatdja say, we all go outside and start blowing northward? Maybe send this stuff back up to the arctic where it belongs! Only went down to 18 here last night, but 25 mph winds. Supposed to be colder tonight. Hope not. They were saying last night going down to 0. Sure glad the weathermen lie a lot!
The first year my oldest brother moved to Arizona, he called on Christmas Day. It was a cold snap there, 25F. It was a warm spell up here that year ('82) and it was 45F in Ohio. We had a great time teasing him about moving somewhere "warm".
I can't wait to post the temps 2 weeks from now from SUNNY Spring Hill, FL. Taking bets it will be 80 and we will be opening the pool. So there SnotMartha!LOL
Hey, don't be blowing that cold weather up to Alaska, now! We've been having an unseasonably warm winter so far, with little snow. It's 3:40PM here, the sun is going down, and our temp is still above freezing. It's 34 degrees F. right now...warmer than Florida!
When I saw the subject of this thread, I just caught the words 'teens' and 'Florida'. I thought you guys were having a riot during spring break or something! I've always admired all those wonderful palm trees. I hope they can withstand all this... as you say, too tall to cover them!
Here in Alaska we are accustomed to preparing our plants for freeze. Snow is the best mulch of all, but I have used straw when the snows don't come. I'd be concerned for those plants that are in containers. A good cover will help, but packing some sort of material around pots can help prevent damage to the roots. Here we bury our potted plants in the ground if we winter them over outdoors.
Hey, as far as insects are concerned, I've seen our Alaskan mosquitoes hatching and flying out of snowbanks... some things can handle any kind of weather.
thanks for info weezen, i have always wondered about that insect theory. i know people say a good cold winter will lessen the population, but when you have a lot of bugs, you have a lot of bugs, whats a few more.... it's 28 here now. the lowest i remember was the winter of 79-80, went to 9 degrees.
If it weren't so sad, it would be funny...Florida colder than Alaska! You know, it isn't really the fact that it is so cold now, but that it is seldom cold, so no one and nothing is prepared for it. It is the opposite here in Seward. Our summers are quite mild, seldom getting above 70 degrees, and when it does, everyone starts peeling off clothes like its a heatwave. All those bare white legs are pretty disturbing!
LOL Weez. I identify with that about 70 degrees being a heatwave! I grew up in the mountains of Montana and it was very nice to have 70 degrees in the summer. We couldn't raise tomatoes because they wouldn't ripen. But our pansys were gorgeous!
I have been wondering about all the plants down in the south all day. They say that our vegetable prices will rise.
It was 50 degrees here today but we were also socked in with fog. Without the fog we could have gotten into the 60s. This weather pattern is supposed to continue for the next week too. I hope it warms up in the south for all your sakes. (I am NOT going to join NotMartha for a tar and feather bath)
Our produce prices have gone up considerably lately, and the produce doesn't look all that good. This weird weather is already affecting the grocery prices, I'm afraid. It's really rather disconcerting to realize that this weather quirk can make or break small businesses, let alone ruin beautiful trees and flowers. I wish our friends in the south could blow that weather up here, it would be fine with me. We're used to it. We have parkas and our plants have long since been in a bed of ice and snow. I sure hope it ends soon.
Good morning! It was only 32.2 this morning at 6:30 and has been that since about midnight. WHO FOOLED WITH MOTHER NATURE??!!
You're right Weez, we are not prepared for this type of weather...we can protect a few fragile plants from our normal air frosts...but this? Devastating. Plants and grass blackened and collapsed, it looks so bad. We're due to get into the upper 50s today and no more freezes for the next few days. Meteorologists say more arctic air coming in, details soon.
Kikisdad...sure hope you're right, can you come down sooner or do we really have to wait two weeks??
It's time to move to San Diego, weather station shows it was around 79 yesterday!
All the plants I have outside are dead, including the hardy passion vines.
So sorry Tim - I wondered when you moved if you would have a gh up there. What a shame, all your hard work zapped!
Tim, depending on your patience you should wait to see how those plants do. you may have seen my list of what has come back from frosts before, some just take some time, including plumeria, peace lilies, arrowhead plant, belotti, and some more tropicals i can't think of the names of right now.
Sorry for everyone experiencing cold temperatures that they aren't used to. I've told my co-workers that I brought PA cold with me when I moved. :) They're not impressed, but I am. Nice, cold winter, to freeze out the mean, stinging, biting bugs. All those ickie mosquitos that brought west nile can get their little eggs froze solid and dead. :)
But, on the upside, this cold snap pretty much silences the argument of global warming, wouldn't you say?
-Jennifer
We have teens predicted again Tuesday night, no lows about 35 for i think the next week. more cold nights this winter alrady than 3 or 4 average winters here.
Jennifer, global warming? hah! lol....
sorry tim-i know your pain-honest i do!!! I do feel bad for the plants and animals that are not use to the cold.
But ya'll know how I long to be in a warm state(never happen)and out of this cold cold place and how a few of ya'll like to rub it in!! ;) My sis is in Al is remembering her childhood this week! grin
I do want ya'll to warm up and soon-but now you can relate to all of us up north-freezing everyday! My garden gets zapped every yr and dies for the winter and i cry cry cry-but it all comes back again in the spring!!!!!
so hold on spring is here soooooooooooon!!!!!
**********ducking***********
I do feel sorry for all you in the south and mid west and north east. We here is Pacific northwest have had a really good winter so far. But of course winter isn't over. I have lived here all my life and actually wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I've been in all but 5 of the 50 states and prefer this. It only got down to 35 degrees last night , very foggy this morning. We had 6 inches of new snow Tues. night and Wed. practically gone now. My oldest son lives in Baton Rouge, haven't talked to him for a couple of weeks. Good luck for all you in the warmer climates. Donna (rutholive)
You tell'em David. Turn up the heat, I,m heading down there in 17 days, but who's counting.
Paul
Seems like the weathermen lied again. They had been promising us that it would warm up Sunday. Well, guess what? Another arctic blast forecast for tomorrow; goin down to single digits again. But the last time they said that, it didn't happen. Some area schools closed because of the predicted cold that didn't come, and boy are they hearing about it!
Staying inside, tending my indoor garden, wishing for warmth. *sigh*
I sure wish you could all put your collective breath together and blow that cold air north! I am feeling sad for you and your plants and pets that are sensitive to the cold.
Please dont blow that cold air north, we're cold enough as it is up here =)
I've learned to welcome the winter up here. My little plants get tucked into a soft bed of snow, only to wake up the following spring. Tulips even push themselves up through the ice. Here, as in the south, the weather changes are our worst enemy. A run of warm weather can kill plants here, just as a cold snap can kill them down south.
I get things done in winter in the house that I wouldn't get done otherwise. This winter it has been so warm that I am not getting anything done in the house. Today I was pulling weeds in the yard. Easy to pull them since it has been raining. 52 degrees today here! 38 is the expected low tonight. More warmth and rain tomorrow.
