It going to be in the teens in florida????

Old Town (Gainesvill, FL(Zone 8a)

I just simply can not believe for 2 nights it will be in the teens here. I believe alot of people here are going to lose plants this weekend due to the cold. It is going to be 14 on Thurs Night and 18 on Friday night. I know some of our palms here can not take extended weather below 20 and they say it will be in the teens for hours both nights.... OH MY..... Where do I have to move to keep warm haha

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Hope you don't loose anything nice. As the Finnish saying goes, "Mikä ei tapa se vahvistaa" - "What doesn't kill strenghtens" (or somethin). We're getting little colder here, pheww... hate those few wet days.

High Springs, FL(Zone 8b)

According to the weatherman last night, depending on which way the high pressure system moves, it could get down to 10 DEGREES!!! Hopefully that won't happen.

DH says its too cold here and we should move to Florida. Oh, wait - we ARE in Florida...

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Katrina, my head is spinning, i've been trying to figure what to do. i don't think laying the pots down and covering with blankets will work.... guess i'll listen to DH and DS moan about moving 100 pound pots inside....lol... too close to spring to lose them now.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

arlene, don't take any chances!!!!

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

tig i sure won't. dh is off thursday, lol....i know he can't wait. my little 10 X 10 greenhouse.... worked great last weekend, don't know if it can take 10F, or that many hours of sub freezing. maybe a another layer of plastic over it?

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Norma,lol.... has this been the nastiest winter you can remember? for how many nights in the 30s? i'm dying to see if the bugs are less this summer, lol... not counting on it.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

10 F in FL? We have 32 here right now.

Come Spring...

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Ack! We're due to get into the 20s. I guess Mother Nature is making up for our last mild winter. I don't think we've been much above 70 for a while, especially not on the weekends...

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

yES, It's getting cold over here.. tonight it will be around 30 but tmw night it says it going to be 19... I better go and put lights on under my temp. GH. I hate cold weather! Brrrrrrr!

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

just heard in the mountains in new hamshire they had 100 mile an hour winds, wind chill to ---90.... minus 90F! hope snowhermit is warm up there......

Old Town (Gainesvill, FL(Zone 8a)

Yes it seems the weekends are colder here for some reason or another! I really think this is going to hit the plant industry down here pretty hard. Just as an example, our wash palms (norma and arlene the one in our parking lot) are over 10' high there is absolutely no way to protect these and they are worth thousands of dollars put togther. There are records of them withstanding 20's for hours but nothing recorded of them withstanding teens. I feel that gainesville is going to lose alot of palms especially sagos this time around. Our frost blanket we use to cover is a lightweight one made for FLORIDA and is not going to be sufficient to protect these things. We are moving everything we can possibly fit into the greenhouse, other than that I guess the only thing we can do is pray!

As for my new nursery someone is going to be staying up or setting alarm clock thurs and fri to go and refill the kerosene in the greenhouse (no-one is living at the location right how) and I live an hour away so praying my mom and sister will take up the slack for me!! Otherwise might have to get me a cot and sleep in it heehhehe :)

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Can't believe it will get to 10 in Fl, they are predicting 10 here in Atlanta too. We have Daffs popping up all over, but they are tough. If the heater doesn't fail, the gh should be fine.

Good luck to you guys down there. I hope this will be the coldest blast of the season, better now than later. Arlene do you have a heater in your gh?? We have a little $17.00 utility heater, also a little Coleman propane heater for a back-up for these extra cold nights.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Yeah here the same MINI hate this change so much weather so weird drive me nuts! LOL

Old Town (Gainesvill, FL(Zone 8a)

The heater is a 60,000 btu kerosene heater. It doesn't ever fail, but the gas only lasts 10 hours or less so if we start it at 10 at night (when mom normally goes to bed) it probably with these cold of conditions will not last until about 6 am or so... We have not found a thermostat for this yet however that would be a great help. Maybe I can get one at tractor supply...

Mcallen, TX(Zone 8a)

Wellll, they say "El Nino" is back of coming back... and the last time around, remember?
I was Mom to El Nino and he still lives here at home with us!

I will pray for ya'll - it is so difficult to liv ein zones 9-10 and have so many luscious tropical temp thngs nad then this happens! OUCCCCHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

High Springs, FL(Zone 8b)

Arlene, you're right - these are probably the lowest temps I've experienced down here. I've got company for dinner tonight, but they may be eating late 'cuz I've got plants to bring in when I get home!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Crossing my fingers for you in Florida, and for us in Central Texas that it doesn't come here. We will have some of our coldest temps of the season this week, but the forecast hasn't mentioned anything as drastic as teens. With the cost of propane increasing daily, I might be tempted to hibernate.

Old Town (Gainesvill, FL(Zone 8a)

Well Norma you have tommorow to do it too really :)I don't think it will be too awful

Katrina

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Norma, now put them to work! lol...
i hope they are wrong again, last weekend it was only 27 i think here, they had predicted 20 one night. lastest prediction is low teens thursday nite, 20 friday night, high 20s saturday night.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

trust me, the guys will groan, but will get over it, use them!!! get those babies in:)

Allen Park, MI(Zone 6a)

Turn up the heat, I'm coming down in 3 weeks. Need at least 75-80 :)

Paul

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Our high tomorrow is predicted to be 26 with a low tomorrow night of 10 with wind chills below 0. Well we did get the water level up this fall so everything is not bad. I'll be going to work at 5:30 Friday morning and that doesn't sound like any fun. Glad it will warm up some during the day Friday. Good luck to everyone. Hope it won't be to bad.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

It really seems weird that it will be colder in Florida than it is in Idaho! Our nights are in the mid 20s and days are in the upper 40s right now. I will be thinking of you and praying for your plants!

Old Town (Gainesvill, FL(Zone 8a)

Thank you so much pond. Currently it is 29 at my house and dropping fast, with wind chill it feels 21.... Goodness gracious.... There is going to be alot of unhappy plants in florida tommorow :(

Katrina

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

:( I am feeling your pain, all of you. I know how cold that can be when your homes are not even prepared for it either. Be sure to drink lots of liquids as you don't realize how easy it is to get dehydrated when it is this cold. And keep those covers on the plants and you might be suprised at how many make it!

It is still 32 degrees here. Not bad for a January winter in Idaho. We need the cold and some snow! Can you send it up here? Please.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i woke up at 4:15, went to check the temp, 21F. went to close the door the lights went out. out for 45 minutes. hopefully the little greenhouse held its temp. i am especially glad i had the heater on. hadn't turned it on until last week. glad they weren't out that long, what a bummer if the pipes freeze. down here, most leave water running inside and out in case of freeze, instead of super insulating or burying? like up north.

Montgomery, AL(Zone 8a)

Good morning Arlene. It is 13 outside now, probably drop another couple of degrees before daylight. I have managed to keep my Gh at 60 degrees. I almost lost everything last week during the cold. I had a short in my wiring and lost all power, just glad it did not start a fire. It must have happened around 4 am as the temp in the GH only feel to 50.
Stay warm. What about your hummer?

Larry

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

It's about 6:15a and the thermometer reads 26.3*!! Why couldn't we at least have had snow with this cold?? LOL

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Ponditis, you don't believe how pretty it is here now. It got colder -7 (perfect), and we have lots of new white snow, and sun is shining... no clouds in the sky. :)

Old Town (Gainesvill, FL(Zone 8a)

Well getting ready to leave for work and its 22 right now. Hopefully thats it, if so some things might have a chance :) I am going to get ready to go and freeze now haha you all stay warm!

Katrina

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Morning, all! Larry, you sure have your greenhouse toasty. mine'll be doing good to be 40, don't have a thermometer in it. i'm glad it didn't start a fire also! the little guy was still hanging out yesterday. Stacey, you are right, we should at least have snow! funny, we're only 5 degrees colder than you. Katrina, they are saying mid teens tonight...sure hope they are wrong agin.

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

The temps are still dropping here too Larry, I just looked again, dreading that I have to leave for work in 45 mins, and it's now 25.7*

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Central Texas seems to have hovered in the upper to mid 20s, instead of dropping to 14 as predicted. And the wind was calm after about 11 PM, which helped. My little greenporch is at 40, with only three 60 watt bulbs for heat. One of those is the ceiling light, so it isn't doing maximum good, but it helps. My poor little roses don't know whether to bloom or sleep. As much as I dislike cold, I know we need to endure several nights of this, to reduce the insect population. But it will probably be back above freezing the rest of the week. I hope everyone's plants come through fine, and no one has broken pipes. Florida folks, you have my best wishes.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

it's 9 here, don't know how any greenhouse could survive that! I know they do, just can't see how

Old Town (Gainesvill, FL(Zone 8a)

Well, I made it to work not frozen hahah. It is 20 here now. I think its still dropping not sure though. That is the weather channel I didn't brave to go out to look at the thermometer!!! I can see some of the palms yellowing badly already. Only time will tell with them, but should know monday what their situation is....

Katrina

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Just checked - yes it is 9 here now and 39 in my "good" gh. So glad I got most things inside from the "brug house", just couldn't do it all. Aleast there won't be frost in there and no real "Freeze".

These little remote thermometers are great.
I have a lot of little house plants out there but nothing of any real value. If this was very often I would have a bigger heater. Those of you in Fl will have it worse that us here I'm sure.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

I feel really bad for all you southeners-poor babies arent use to this cold stuff!!!
Me I freeze like this every day every yr! I listen to Mz Lisa brag about her warm weather-now whes worryin about her poor chickens being to cold!!! POOR things!!
I do feel bad for all of you that arent use to these temps-but i do want you to know this-im smiling-I cant help it! I get a chuckle watching the warm states get a taste of the "chill". It is WINTER ya know!
Hope ya'll have weathered the freeze and I know your temps will be going up soon-we may reach 25 by the weekend!!!
Still NO snow here!
keep smiling-I am! mwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

We may have to get out a tar pot and drag it north! What do ya think Lisa???You've got the feathers!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)
