Oh, no prob there...I wouldn't consider this to be a sabotaged thread, just loads and loads of info!
As I was driving by, again, I noticed that dog hanging around his own house! Maybe he's decided he's had enuff of "woods living" and has staked out his own territory where he is SUPPOSED to live! That would be fine with me. If he LIVES there, and just makes an occasional jaunt thru the neighborhood, (then goes back home!) that suits me just fine. There are very few houses around here, mostly large land tracts, so if he wants to explore and is not killing our animals or causing other kinds of damage I can live with that, for now. Should any negative stuff start happening, then maybe it's rock salt/learn a lesson time.
Got tips to make a dog trap?
You could try what my neigbors do to scare off geese
They shoot bottle rockets(they call them scud missles)they don't aim at them but the noise scares them off.Maybe he will be scared enough to go home......
And Ponditis,I'm glad I'm not the only one with a pyree problem child.....
What does your dog do wrong, crestedchik? They say that misery loves company so we frustrated dog owners need to stick together.
Well, lets begin with BARKING!!!and barking and barking ....on and on and on.There is nothing there to bark at!
all I can think of is that there is a squirrel 2 miles away teasing him
he's suppose to be guarding the poultry barn....
If he's not barking ,he's sleeping soooo sound that the fox can walk right by him
We started to wonder if he's deaf....
He CAN hear a can opener
Lifting his leg on anything ,including the household furniture(NO,he is no longer welcome in the house)
And he doesent seem to like men much...
He is a rescue dog,he was 2 when we got him ,he's 3 now.....
The people who gave him up were not honest with us....till we got him here.....
AAH! Our dog loves to bark also but his voice is low pitched so it isn't so bad. He mostly barks at night when people in our area turn their dogs loose for awhile to roam. All the other dogs in the neighborhood are barking also so there is no worry about him worrying folks. He does sleep very lightly and stays alert all the time. I will say that for him. We do have critters, (foxes, coons, possums, etc.) that roam the area also so that is understandable. I think coyotes have been coming into our area lately also. Maybe your dog is just barking as a warning that nothing is allowed to come in his territory. Have you consider nutering your dog? Ours isn't marking things yet but we are planning to alter him right away in hopes that won't happen.
Some man or men may have gotten mean with him in the past. He probablly has a good reason for that dislike. It is a shame folks weren't honest as to the reasons he was passed on to you. I think the dog would have been less of a disappointment to you if you had been familiar with his problems. Of course, we had no idea the problems our dog had but I can imagine someone just decided he wasn't desirable to have around any longer. Of course he could have gotten out of a field somewhere since we were in farm country when we found him.
Barking can be a sign of boredom. If he's penned or tied up alone, he probably is bored. Have you tried giving him one of those big Kong toys stuffed with treats? Those can keep a dog occupied for hours.
Or what about a companion for him? If you lived closer, I'd hand-deliver our beagle to ya. We need to find him a home, and he'd make someone a good outside dog. 'Course Buddy barks a lot, too, only it's the beagle's "BAarrrrooooo"
Hehehe...good imitation, GW! (I can just see you on all fours, head cocked back high, lips pursed in a 'ooooohh" form, serious look in your eyes..."BAarrrroooo....")
We also call Buddy a drill sargent, because some of his barks sound like he's saying BLEFT! You'd have to hear it, LOL!
Oh ,we have him nutered.....
As for a companion...we have fenced him in with the chickens, they're companions ...aren't they?LOL
Seriously,we put our Great Dane out there with him for a few weeks....
He taught her
all his bad habits..........
He's sitting out there barking now......
I've gotten so sick of his barking I now bring him in and lock him in the Garage overnite....
He's quieter then, but it defeats the purpose of him being out there guarding the birds
But I HAVE to sleep!
We have gone so far as to look into debarking him
I love him but he's driving me nuts.
We tried the zap collars,it did work well, but we were going broke on batteries. He was really good for a few months
I gotta go get him ,he's giving me a head ache.....
Crestedchick: Sounds like time to call the Pet Psychic!
Why don't you get rechargeables for that collar? Just swap them out when they run down. Debarking is such a last resort..It's really his only way of communicating, you know? It seems more behavioral than anything. Still, bet he's bored and keeping himself company the only way he knows how. They're pack animals and get lonely, and a lonely, bored dog is trouble! Been there! I feel for you! :)
But he's not lonely,he has Cinders the Great Dane for a buddy.....Tons of toys...and bones.....
To me debarking is much more humane than ZAP every-time he gets annoying
I also found that his mother was debarked and 3 of his siblings....
The mother was also spayed ,because they were convinced its partially hereditary.
I know the breed is known for barking....and wandering...
And I've had dogs that became annoying by barking...but this is so bad....duct tape sounds good.....
Also, its not so bad right now because its winter ,but the neighbors(who are ACRES away) are reaching their limits of tolerance. They can't leave the windows open at night.Heck,I bought an air-conditioner just so I didn't have to open the window......
CC your dog is beautiful. What pyr isn't though as long as it isn't raining. LOL
Livestock guardian dogs are noted for their barking. That is some of the reason why the wolves would stay away from the flocks. If they hear a big dog barking they avoid the area and conflict. It is their nature. They mainly bark at night unless we humans have interupted their time schedule. Also wandering around the neighborhood is not unusual as their territory around the sheep in the old country would have been as large as about 5 square miles or more! And they need something to guard. Like children, or other pets or you. I used chickens for a couple of years and Oofduh (my older dog) loved her chickens. One time she loved a hen so much that she licked the skin right off that poor bird. I had to take the bird away from her and put it in the stew pot! Oof was just so happy to see me and give me her charge! Now she lives part time with our goats and sheep and she helps the mothers clean up their newborns and get them walking. We have 6 and a half acres and she wants to patrol a larger area which is why she digs out. She doesn't go anywhere but the joggers are scared of her! She wouldn't hurt a human unless it bothered me or her goats and sheep! My DH is not protected at all! LOL Jezreal is louder but she will shut up when told. She was a city dog before we got her and can't be trusted with the livestock. But she is a sweetheart and a littermate to the male we used to have. He dug out and disappeared.
If Oof was a louder barker I would have her devoiced. I had Shelties in the past and a few had that surgery done (before I bought them) and they never missed their voices! They would just bark away and just squeek! My neighbors always wondered about them but they came to realize that the dogs were better off than us getting rid of them or the neighbors having us put them in the pound as bad neighbors. For digging, you might consider trimming their toenails short (really short, short of quicking them) on a weekly basis so that it hurts to dig. Sometimes that works.
My big dogs have never been in my house except for a few minutes. They would destroy my house with their tails let alone my furniture and the hair. AND I am allergic. Outside we get along just fine. If Oofduh digs out she just comes to the house now. She used to leave and trek the neighborhood but when our male disappeared she has stayed home ever since.
As far as the growling is concerned, you need to get a handle on this dog!!!! Immediately!!!! Take him to obedience class right away!!!! He needs to learn who is the boss and he thinks that he is and the longer that goes on the better handle he has on thinking that he is the boss! I would hate to hear that such a big dog had bit you or your granddaughter (by accident) and you had to have him put to sleep because of it after quarantine for rabies! Or somebody who entered your yard before you got him caught and put up in the basement. It could be disasterous! Get that training NOW.
Horseshoe, I am so unhappy with those owners of that dog for not keeping it locked up. It is not a "good thing" for you to have to worry about if it is a safe dog or not. If only they would become good neighbors and keep this dog home!
