My new seed trays arrived today. Aren't these cool? Now I can start 20 different tomatoes, peppers, etc., all in one seed tray, and not have to worry about whether that straggler belongs to the row to the left or the right.
Not to mention, I always manage to put the fastest starters smack-dab in the middle of the flat, and by the time they're ready to be potted up, the others haven't barely begun to emerge. Now it doesn't matter, because I can easily prick out an entire row without disturbing the seeds on either side!
Best of all, one of my (too many to count) seed orders arrived with them. Woohoo!
My new 20-row seed starting trays
Where'd you get it, G-V?
I'm researching seed starting equipment even as we speak, and haven't seen that one anywhere that I can recall.
Looks really cool.
I debated putting in a shameless plug for the vendor in my original post, but I figured y'all might think I worked for 'em or something (I don't - honest!)
Pinetree was my source, although it seems like I saw them in another catalog too. And I think you can get them from other places, too (most of the sources I found sell them by the gross. These were ~$4 apiece, and they're quite sturdy, so I'm hoping they'll hold up for several seasons.
BTW, if you need sources of seed-starting supplies, check the Watchdog under "growing supplies" - you'll find dozens of vendors listed there.
I've have a couple of those... and a couple of the trays for starting little plugs. They work out great for starting a whole mess of seedlings. Do you plan to have your sale this year?
Great idea, gv, I will find me some of those at a nursery supply here I hope.
I'm going to try the same ones this years myself.
You can get alot more plants started in the same space.
Paul
That's really cool; I've never seen any like that before.
Sue, yes - I do plan to have a plant sale (flowers, maters, and peppers) here in April - either the weekend before Easter or the one immediately following. Easter falling so late in the year puts a crimp in my plans, since our last frost date is first or second week of April, and I'd like to have the plant sale mid-month. Looks like it'll be a bit later or earlier than I'd prefer.
I'm tickled pink with these new seed-starting trays. I also have several of the "plug" trays that hold 90-100+ plus, and I'll be using several of those, too (for seeds that can be "broadcast" sown.)
I've used these trays for several years in the greenhouse. They last a long time if I'm careful not to throw them around too much. Each spring I sterilize them with a little bleach water and they're set to go.
I "re-discovered" the other source of these: Harris Seeds catalog has them, 4/$12.95 which is a pretty good price too.
(Their catalog has some pretty good things - I'd say it's comparable to Stokes as far as variety and price. Like Stokes, they cater to the small commercial growers as well as home gardeners. And they have the black ornamental millet, too :)
go-vols, thanks for telling about the seed trays in Harris. I wanted to try some and will get my order out to them right away. thanks again, Donna
Boy, this type of seed tray makes you think about seeds in a different light! I have always used the 38 cell trays and Parks Paks, now called Bio Planting Blocks. The blocks are more expensive this year, but they do such a good job. 40 and 60 cells with replacable spongy material inside. Once the seedling is up, transplant by removing the whole unit. I have had great success with Petunias in the Blocks. Still not sure I want to spend the extra money with Parks. Maybe I will hit the lottery!
Wow! You guys are overpaying at $4/pop. Or even four for $12.95.
Johnny's has them at 5 for $10.90. It's their number 9523, and can be found on page 83 of the new catalog.
lolol. that's great, except...
a) I've already got mine;
b) I didn't order from Johnny's this year; and
c) I couldn't have used five of them anyway
But thanks for the tip - hopefully others who need more than two will benefit from it :)
G-V, are you sure about the price you paid?
Just noticed that the new Pinetree catalog has them listed for $1.98 each. That's half what you paid. Unless: When you ordered yours did it come with a propagation dome? If so, that would explain the difference.
My bad - I was thinking of the price for two. They were indeed $1.98 each.
