Question about planting shrubs

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

I posted this link on the Trees and Shrubs forum but haven't received a reply yet and I'm kind of in a hurry to know the answer to my question. I guess I should have posted here first. Thanks.

I'd plant them! Hollies are evergreens, and often-times evergreens can be planted year round.
Plant them, don't amend the soil too richly, water them in well (not just to settle the soil but so you won't have to water them again too soon) and mulch them heavily so they don't heave during the coming winter/ground freezing. Oh yeh, and do not cut back any branches at this time.

Don't know what kind of holly you have, but remember, some varieties will grow 40 feet easily!

Well lookee here!!! :-) Poppysue just answered my post on the other forum and she thinks I should wait till the Spring. The temps are going to be sooooo low in the coming week Shoe that I don't think I can get them into the ground. They are the Carissa hollies and I would never trim them. As for the heaving of the soil, boy do I know how that can be after seeing the roses in my last US home rise out of the ground almost, so yes everything is well and truly mulched. Thanks for your input and if the weather really warms up considerably, I might still go ahead and plant.

Hmmm...I just read poppysue's post, it said she thought they'd be better off in the ground, not in the pots, which to me means "plant them". Maybe I misunderstood her.

As a second thought, you could also consider re-potting them into bigger pots, eh? (If you wanted to go to that trouble. At least they wouldn't get rootbound that way.)

Oh lor!! You were right!! I don't know what's got into me!! Thanks again, now I shall wait for a warmer day and take a chance on planting them. :-)

Louisa, if you can't get them planted, can you at least sink the pots into the soil, or maybe surround the pots with mulch? That is what I do with some of mine until a winter thaw arrives :) Hope it isn't too late!!
