Holy cow, LL...what do you do with all your leaves? Do you compost them or run them through a shredder? Looks like lots of work.
All my leaves get picked up (by hand, mostly), shredded, and laid on all the beds about 3" deep every fall. Enormous task, but well worth all the time.
When the last of the dreaded English ivy is replaced by ginger and ajuga and other groundcovers, the yard will be mostly rakeable, so a lot less work. Until then, I spend about 6 hours every day picking up leaves :(

Wow - - when you told me of your shady property - I didn't think of all the leaves you would have!! Some exercise!! I used leaves for mulch last year -- they really worked well.
