Does anyone use a garden program to track events?

San Francisco, CA

I thought about getting a garden program, but the ones I saw did not fill my needs, so now I use the aol calendar to send myself email reminder to do garden tasks, at certain times. Plus I use the calendar to post tasks that I have done and need to remember when, or for any new plantings. The problem is it keeps one dependant on aol, if one is to change to a new server then all the data would be lost, so I would prefer a garden program that would be separate. Yahoo has a calendar, that is free but it loads too slowly to be of practical use. Does anyone else use their computer to keep track of garden tasks?

Have you tried using the DG journal, once here and most of us are for some part of the day, you can check your todo list for the day.

No, I never tired it, because it seems confusing, but I will look into it again. Can you send yourself a reminder that will appear, for example, feed lawn, in Sept?

It won't send you a reminder, but each time you open it up, you can view the to-do's, sorted in date order.

ok, so I can post myself on any given date, such as sept 5. feed lawn?

Yep, it won't prompt you, but you can daily check your todo list and update as necessary.

I still could not figure out how to access the to do list and the entries for weather on the journal. I almost bought a cheap cd rom program for a garden journal today, but then I decided it would not work with XP. I am just wondering if anyone can tell me what a good program is to buy or are they all junk?

I have a book called "Month by Month Gardening in the Carolinas" which I refer to often. It covers perennials, annuals, water gardens, roses, trees & shrubs, lawns, etc. I don't know if there is something similar for your zone or not but I really depend on this one. I think you're looking for software as opposed to a book but just wanted to pass this along. I hope you find something.

I have seen books like that for California, but CA is so large and diverse, and we have a micro climate in San Francisco. The SF Chronicle publishes a to do list, every two weeks called garden check list, which does help. The software I was looking at had every day, you can check (like in options boxes), the sun vs clouds, rain and temps, and so on, what you planted and what tasks you did. It is more fun then writing it in a book.

I just found one with 30 days free, so I thought I would try it out, it said you could record locations of bulbs. I have a problem with digging up my hostas by accident, when they are dormant, so maybe this feature would help?

Hey, Bug_Girl!

Maybe you could make a simple notebook, with 12 tabs for the months. (or a calender). Incorporate your tasks for each week.

Then take pictures every month and note the date. At the end of the year, you could make this into a calendar, then sell it!

Well, just an idea! Other people make money this way...

I am using that free program, but so far have not decided to buy it yet or not. I never did see the "to do list", on the journal, but I will look further.

I think people in the same areas, would have the same time lines for events, it all depends on location and organic vs non organic, crops vs flowers, so many variables.

That program I provided the link for does contain a simply to do list, by the only way to have a reminder sent to you for a specific date, is the use the email calander program. One can check the do to list, but it won't send a reminder out of the blue. There are certain things, like feed, that I need to be reminder of. Sometimes I go back and look, "When was the last time I feed?" and see it was months and months ago. So by preselecting a date to feed, I get a reminder close to the date, I should be doing it, and it is more likely to get done.

Why not use your outlook program for that; it sends messages to you on your computer in the calendar section.
