You know those nasty little bugs that hover around your plants when you bring them in the greenhouse or basement or whatever you have in the fall and then again when you start your seeds? Last year I tried everything, the yellow cards with vaseline, tea tree oil, etc. And some of it worked some of the time. But I think I've found a really good one that works all the time. Put white distilled vinegar in a bowl or some kind of throw away container and add a few drops of liquid dish soap. They love it - and they die!
Good bug/fruit fly killer
you mean fungus gnats??? cool!!
I don't know what their names are but gnat sounds right...yeah, it really works!
Great!!!!! I have lost many a seedling to these nasty things! I will definitely do this. Thanks, Vic :)
What a good tip - thanks vic, they're such a pest and no nasty chemicals need go in the soil with this one
Vic, I have also read in 'Great Garden Formulas' by Organic Gardening that 1 tblsp cider vinegar in a small wide-mouth jar & filled 7/8 full of water will also kill fungus gnats. You place it near your plants & all gnats or fruit flies in your house will die in the trap within a few days. It says the cider vinegar attracts only the adult fungus gnats (therefore no reproducing). If you have a severe problem you are supposed to replace the mixture after a week.
cool...I'll keep that in mind. Haven't had a serious problem - yet...When I brought my plants into the basement I noticed a few so I did the vinegar and dw soap and they were all gone within 2 days. I usually have a worse problem when I do seeds in the late winter. Maybe I'll put bowls of both kinds of vinegar out :-) Thank for the recipe..
They love cider vinegar, too. I seem to get a small infestation a couple times a year (usually when we're bringing in tomatoes from the garden; I just set out a glass with about 1/3 cup cider vinegar and a couple drops of dish detergent. A few days later, I empty out the mess, and the bugs are all gone.
Those darn fungus gnats can drive you crazy. I brought some penstemon cuttings inside to root & wouldn't you know it, there are a few flying around. Probably from my bag of soil though. It was from last spring, but it was so expensive that I wasn't throwing it out. Oh well, get out the old vinegar. At least there is a solution.
What perfect timing this is. We have a very large problem of these at work and I won't let anyone spray chemicals so they just seem to be multipling. They are very annoying when you are trying to have a meeting and one flies up you nose (it's hard to be professional). I'm going to try this today...thank you, thank you.
