Over Wintering Ferns?

Cullman, AL(Zone 7a)

I have no greenhouse and no space to overwinter all the Boston and Kimberly Queen Ferns that I have in my garden. Last year, in an effort to save them, I dug holes out in the woods and put them in their pots into the holes and covered them with leaves. I didn't cut the fronds off before I covered them. They died back during the winter but came back out this summer. Do you think it would be better to go ahead and cut them back before I cover them this year? Or should I just leave them like I did before? Your opinions would be appeciated. Doris

If it worked before ... I'd do it again!

Why not try it both ways?? Did it make it harder to cut the dead off of it once spring time arrived?? In other words did you have to work around the new growth while trying to prune out the old dead fronds? I would take that into consideration before putting them in the ground this year. Other than that I would do just as you done. Like PoppySue said if it worked one time, why not try it again this year?

I will try some both ways. Why didn't I think of that? Yes, there was a lot of hard trimming to get them back in shape, that's why I was wondering if it would hurt to go ahead and cut them back now. Ladies, thanks for your help! Doris

Not a probelm, Be sure and let us know how well they do.

That's an interesting idea, Doris. Never would have thought of trying that. I have limited space and a number of ferns also. And I want to buy some huge ones a couple sell before they freeze because they don't have a way to keep them. Was wondering how I was gonna cram them in the house. I just might have to try your method with some of mine.

Hope it works for you. I have mine all "dug in." Can't believe we haven't gotten a freeze yet. The leaves are falling like crazy today! I'm sure it won't be much longer. Good luck. Doris
