We've grown a passion vine outside for the first time this year.
Should it be cut back after the first frost or just left alone?
Thanks
Paul
Passifloria ?
Paul,
Which one is it? From the gathering at Sami's? If it is a P. caerulea or P. incarnata, mulch it well and it will come back next year. Anything else you may have to take it in for the winter.
Tim
Yes it is one that you gave me at Sami's.
I'm not sure which one.
Should I cut the foilage back or just leave it alone and mulch it heavily?
Paul
I would leave the vine alone and mulch heavily. Do you really need to cut the vine back?
I sure need to cut mine back... they have taken over the gazebo... I have been meaning to cut them back for weeks, and havent been able to do it quite yet. maybe this weekend.
Will do Tim
The cutting back can wait until spring.
Thanks
Paul
I gotta question for ya Tim. A couple of mine that I brought inside now are droping leaves. Is this normal?
Tim
Will the new growth next year come from old stems or will it grow new from the roots?
Paul
the ones I'm bringing in, how far do I cut them back?? (might as well get all the questions in one thread)
Sue,
Yes, it's normal for them to drop their leaves when you bring them in, just like most plants. Treat them like house plants, hold back the water a bit, give as much light as possible.
Paul,
That depends on which species you have. P. incarnata, caerulea, and any of the ones that die-back will sprout from the fleshy roots, and around where the base of the plants are. The P. vitifolia I planted in the ground took the frost well last year, only the tender tips were damaged. The other P. vitifolia was in a pot, well mulched, die back to the main stem about 4-5" above the soil and sprouted new growth from the stem. I even found a sucker from the one in the ground, about 10" away from the base of the plant.
Bonnie,
Most people cut them back to about 1 foot above the soil level. From what I recall, Vanderplank recommended not to trim to bare wood, some species will not come back (P. racemosa). Be sure you have a few nodes with leaves below the cut.
Tim
You the man!!!!!!!!!
Thanks
Paul
