Chestnut preparation - question

Zone 6, OH(Zone 6a)

Anyone ever eat Chinese chestnuts? How do they taste and how do you prepare them? I have a small Chinese chestnut tree that's begining to produce nice large nuts.

soak in water about 30 min. slice a cross in the nut, then put in a cookie sheet and bake in oven not to long just until when you squeeze the nut the skin will pop. if you bake to long they will dry out. 350 oven.

yummy! hard to discribe it is a nut but it has a nice sweet flavor not like sugar. you can't eat just one. :)

I have never soaked chestnuts, as I usually roast them when very fresh. Does it help?

Our town now has a chestnut roasting cart outside our best natural foods market during the fall. They are promoting the return of chestnut trees to the Appalachians. There is a new strain that looks promising and farmers are encouraged to plant them for a crop.

my mother said to soak them. when i did bake them i forgot to soak and they were a little dryer i think the soaking adds the moistness they need for the special flavor. esp. if you don;t know how fresh they are.
chestnut is my favorite nut. i tried planting trees a few yrs ago but they didn't make it. but i will try again. we are paying $4.+ a lb in the stores. i would love to get in on that action.
