Tip before bringing in plants

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Almost too late for most of us - but here is a tip.

About 6 weeks before bringing in your plants for winter - take a wooden pencil, cut it into 3" sections, split it into and toss the lead. Push 2 or more of the sections into the soil around the edge of the pot.

Unwanted insects will leave the soil and plant before you bring it into the house. Sticks from a Cedar tree will produce the same results!!

I have also heard that placing a few copper pennies in and around your plants will keep the snails away! Something in the copper that sends a shock to the snails when they try passing over the pennies! I am going to try this in a few of mine this year, and next year my hosta's will have lots a pennies! LOL

Copper sheeting is sold that you can use for the same results (keep away slugs and snails). It is expensive though, much more than a few pennies. Great idea!

Azalea you are so smart.
The thing about the copper pennies made me think of this. Has nothing to do with plants but something someone might like to know. When you make coffee in a brewer to keep the coffee from getting old if you don't drink it right away place a few coppers on the heat plate for the pot to sit on. It will keep the coffee from tasting burnt. A trick from the deli at Kroger.

Jim - thanks, but I am not so smart - I just copied this article from my Garden club newsletter!! And Mollybee posted about the pennies!! But thanks! I haven't tried these things either, but think I will.

that's funny you should mention copper pennies for slugs and snails, mollybee! the reason being, is we have friends who stayed in a Palm Springs motel and the propietor placed copper pennies at the door stoop of the lobby...the only problem was...anybody new who entered there, kept picking them up and giving them back to her..she was trying to stop the ants from entering the building!
