Last year's poinsettia

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

A friend gave me a beautiful poinsettia plant that she had kept all year. It's huge!

How do I get the bracts to change color for the Holidays?

I know it has something to do with the amount of darkness they get....who has the formula?

This is good info GV! I also have a beautiful poinsettia left over from our nephew's wedding last Christmas and was wondering if it would change color for me this year. Now I know how to do it!

melody, my aunt when she was living here in Calif had the most beautiful poinsettia growing behind her house. It grew all the way up to the roof and was covered in flowers all winter. She did nothing for it, not even watering. I had never seen them out of the little pots you buy them in and it was a real surprise.

This one is over 3 foot tall with a trunk. Looks like someone decided to make a standard out of it. I've got it on the porch and it gets it's garbage bag every night now. The temps are somewhat warmer than it needs though...got up to 87 yesterday and most nights ate in the 60-70 range. Thanks ya'll for the info!

When I used to live in Southern California, in Inglewood, we had a poinsettia that was over 10' tall. I don't think anyone ever watered it or did anything special. I would not go to the trouble to make it a year round house plant here.

Each year my wife buys poinsettias for a couple dollars at a local supermarket. We have one that is coming onto its fifth birthday in our house, and another that is approaching its second. The older one, which came to us less than a foot tall, is now about three feet tall, with a trunk spliting into three main branches of nearly an inch. The younger, because I have pinched it back at every opportunity, is still short but has become a dense shrub. What I've never been able to do it get these to rebloom. The garbage bag idea is so simple and effective that I'm whacking my head against the screen for never having thought of it. Thanks!

Adam.
