I have a ton of clay pots from an auction.
Do you like to use them?
what do you plant in them?
WHY?
pros/cons?????????
thanks for looking n have a beautiful day whereever you are!

clay pots or not?
I love clay pots! They do dry out faster than plastic but the look so much nicer to me. What you can plant in them depends on the size of the pot. I wish I could afford to put all my plants in them but the budget will not allow it.
It sounds like you hit the jackpot though!
Yes, i like them too. I have all manner of plants in them, but, as you say Zany, they do dry out quicker, so are best for plants that like free drainage
Cacti and succulents of course, pelargoniums, most half hardy annuals, convolvuluses etc.
I find they're really good for azaleas too, if large enough, though you need to watch the watering.
Love them! And as philomel stated, succulents are perfect in them!! I like them in groupings, with a different succulent in each, or those wide shallow ones with a nice assortment...
thanks everyone!=]
I have Ice plant growing in one, and it's absolutely to die for. and because it's a suculent, it does well even when it dries out.
In my view the pro's are they look good and (as stated) many plants do well if watered properly because the roots breathe better.
Con's (quite apart from being expensive); they need more watering; are incredibly heavy once planted up and they don't cope with frost well.
We have a mixture of both but I do prefer other materials.
I had a couple of very pretty ones last year, but unfortunately, I didn't bring them in over the winter and they broke. Since I'm a tired and lazy gardener by the time fall/winter comes around, I'm thinking that I will only use plastic now until I train myself to bring them in.
The plastic ones aren't as pretty though, and if I had the room to store them for the winter, I'd use them!
I think the clay ones look much nicer, but yes they are heavy. Today I took several plants out of my big ones, trimmed the roots and potted them in plastic to store in the gh - saves space too. I have several Hibiscus and lg E Ears in them.
I found that if I put heavy plastic (perforated or holey) as a liner in some of my clay pots, they work much better: it eliminates the need to water 2-3 times a day in the hottest part of summer.
I prefer to use them indoors to hold some of my wintering-over plants that do best in dryish conditions, especially pelargoniums, tuberous begonias, cactus and succulents, etc. And no worries about leaving them out to be cracked during winter that way.
Very smart Lupine - why didn't I think of that!! Guess I'm not that smart, lol!
I only use them for house plants. I have nowhere to store the pots in the winter if I used them outside. I do use clay pots for alot of crafts.
I use clay pots mostly..although I have bought a coupe of the ones that are plastic that look like clay..they are lighter.
I like the look of them when they get aged.
I do put them all in the garage or in the basement though, over the winter.
I love clay pots, but they are likely to develope algae due to our wet summers. The slugs also love the terracotta. However, I still use them for my geraniums, and I have four very large pots in which I put my somniferum poppies and tall malvas.
