summer poinsettia?

Fayette, MO(Zone 6a)

Is anyone familiar with this plant?. I maybe shoulda asked in the identification forum, but I don't have a picture to post. I went to an elderly neighbor ladies for lunch today and this was growing in her front yard. I knew immediately it was in the poinsettia family, but don't even know enough to do a search. She sent me home with a couple of plants, but the root systems weren't very good. I don't think it's a perrenial. I may have to go back and see if I can pick some seeds. Does anyone else have this?

Dori, you probably got that from me summer before last. I gave Terry hers that year also. It is an annual and can actually get quite tall and take a lot of room when it has good soil and water. It spreads easily from seeds. I would just wait and get some of the tiny plants from the lady next spring if she will let you. I have them all over the place in the spring. I have lots of little ones now also but have already pulled up the big ones that had gotten scraggly.

Yes! that's the one I saw as well. The Euphorbia cyanthophora by Torogers5. I just thought this was such a neat plant. I don't think the plants she gave me make it. Not enough root system so I may beg some seeds from her later in the autumn. She has enough of it I think it must be pretty hardy here in zone 5.
Thanks everyone.

get this my 5yr old broke my plant off yesterday-go figure-now i have to collect any seeds! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I had always just guessed it was perennial, so it must self seed. My neighbor gave me some a few years ago and I have had it since. It is not a pest, but shows up just enough to be welcome. :)

Dori, I will have plenty next spring so just let me know if you want any then. Your seeds are probably green now and may not work later as they didn't dry on the plant. No problem, I will have jillions.

Badseed, with kids the age of yours, you might collect some seeds when they're ripe for the entertainment value. Put them in a jar (an clean mayo jar works well - glass will give the best sound effects) and add the lid (unless you want them all over the place!)

Depending on their ripeness and the number of seeds you gather, you'll get a sporadic mexican-jumping-bean/popcorn effect in that jar for hours/days. You can always sprinkle them back out in the garden this fall, wherever you want plants next spring.
