Ferguson's Fragrant Nursery

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

I visited this nursery today and they have a gorgeous display garden. They used lots of the plants that one would use in containers for hanging baskets etc right into the ground like the wave petunias, the tapien verbenas, diascias and it was awesome. Any more ideas of plants that behave this way?

The other thing I noticed was fragrance. There is a viburnum that is blooming now out there that was heavenly. The heliotrope was great too. What are some of the plants that you have found that have great fragrance?

Perrysburg, OH(Zone 5a)

Heliotrope is one of my favorites. Also, butterfly bush, its about five years old and it seems to get more fragrant every year. Of course I love jasmines but they hate me!!! I just can't keep one alive. Oh, don't forget stock and tuberroses, they smell heavenly!!!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

(hehe...giggling here. All ya'll hafta do is mention "fragrance" and by automatic reflex notmartha bursts out with "night scented stock!!!!!"!!!) Hehe, love it! She LOVES that stuff!!

(and I have seeds from her for starting soon, nahhh nahh na-nahhhh nah!)

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Well, shame on me, I am not that familiar with night scented stock, all I have ever seen is the little bedding plants in the spring called stock. Educate me,notmartha. Are they an annual, tall, white or colors? There is nicotiana that are really fragrant in the evening and that is what I see in my mind when I think night scented stock.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Datura and moonflower are a must for the evening garden! I agree about the butterfly bushes too. Other favorites are roses.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Don't forget the butterfly ginger and brugmansias!!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I usually plant Lots of those dark blue petunias because they are so fragrant. This year I had a hard time finding them. I also like the lilium species. And corsican mint underfoot along the pathway is wonderful. Springtime I love the narcissis and hyacynths.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Snapdragons and sweet peas! And Nasturtiums,,,not sweet but fragrant.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Yummy in the salad too are those Nasturtiums. Taste peppery. I also love Lavender in my flower beds. They are fragrant if you brush by them as well as fragrant flowers.

Lenjo, night scented stock is a hardy annual Matthiola bicornis. Sow it direct in the ground in march. The flowers open at dusk, but they are not at all showy, shaded pink. The scent is out of this world - from i seed packet, if they grow well, you'll scent the whole street at night!

I also love daphnes, viburnums, philadelphus, syrings palibiniana, and, to really knock your socks off, pittosporum tobira.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Here's s'more of my favorite frangrances..

Sarcococca ruscifolia, Orange blossoms, sweet violets and California pepper tree(Schinus molle)

NOT: gardenia, jasmine or honeysuckle..these give me headaches for some reason. Do these bother anyone else??

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Prostrate rosemary on the pathways is also incredibly wonderful. The smell will take you right to Italy. Mama mia There are a lot of different flowering varieties out there, I have a blue one weaving through a white one that are out of this world together.

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Yes i love rosemary too lupin. They are traditionally used as a welcome at the garden gate. I have a prostrate one in a pot by the front door, for people to brush against and tread on when they visit me
