Hi! I'm new to the forum! I would like to get some ideas from you folks on what kind of plants I can put in an old wheel barrow. I would like something that blooms from summer to fall. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! :o)
Wheel Barrow Ideas?
Welcome to DG, iluvhummers! My neighbor has a couple old-timey wheelbarrows filled with geraniums, which look really nice. I know that's probably not very inspired, but they sure are perky, and they'll bloom all summer with some care!
My neighbor fills hers with petunias. Welcome to Dave's. You'll love it here :) Julie
And don't forget you can also use perennials and wheel the whole thing into a frost-free shed over the winter. Some that come to mind are:-
Chrysogonum virginianum (May to October) vigorous plants if kept moist and in part shade.
Cranesbills (hardy geraniums)Wargrave Pink, Buxton's Blue, Russell Pritchard, G. lancastriense 'Splendens' bloom all summer if deadheaded.
Catananche coerulea bloom all summer.
Euphorbia seguieriana - all summer.
Erigeron 'Darkest of All', 'Foersters Darling' - all summer.
Nepeta - all summer.
Osteospermum jucundum (May to November).
Potentilla 'Gibson's Scarlet'.
Linum narbonense 'Heavenly Blue'.
Scabiosa 'Clive Greaves', 'Butterfly', 'Pink Mist' - May to October.
Coreopsis verticillata - all summer and vigorous. The pink one is less so I think.
Verbena bonariensis - June to October.
Even if you were to choose just one of the above and plant a few of them you would get a lovely display. But two or three of the above would look lovely.
Hope this is not too overwhelming :-)
Welcome to Dave's Garden iluvhummers. I know you will enjoy visiting with all of us here in the Garden.
Louisa has given you a lovely list of plants for your wheelbarrow. Please post a photo of it in the Photo forum when you have finished your planting. We would love to see it.
Louisa I am so glad you mentioned Scabiosa. I am planning to put some plants in an old red wagon. Scabiosa was not one of the plants I had decided on but when I read your list I knew I had to plant some in the wagon.
Hi go_vols, dignbloom, louisa, & Happy_Gardener! Thanks for the welcome, and all the ideas! I went to my local nursery yesterday, and the fella there fixed me up with some plants. I have the Purple Verbena in the middle, and Vinca Vine going all around the outside. I really like the Verbena! Louisa, what a great list you gave me! Now, if I only new what all of it is...LOL... Is there some place on the net where I can look plants up? Again, thanks for all the ideas....:o)
Glad to give my twopennies worth :-) There are many sites but one I like is www.women.com for a lot of helpful info. Click onto their gardening site and take a look at their lovely images of flowers etc. Good luck and don't forget that photo!!!
Sorry - this will be my third attempt at putting the link here, maybe someone can tell me what Im doing wrong. Ive tried to delete the http and it still does not work.

Hello iluvhummers - neat name. Welcome to DG. That barrow sounds as though it'll be pretty. I'm going to do my tubs in a few days.
That's a good site Louisa. I couldn't get the link to work either. I copied the address and pasted it into the address line - not sure if I've described that very well, and it came up straight away as soon as I pressed enter. That's still faster and more accurate than typing it in.
Welcome iluvhummers!! You'll like it here!!
Is this the link Louisa?

lol - yes Jean, you got it!!! Thanks so much - don't know how you did it :-)
Hi Northerner, & JJsgarden! Thanks for the welcome! Louisa, thanks for the link to that site...:o) I copied and pasted it like Northerner did, and it worked just fine. I looked up all the plants in your list. Thanks for taking the time to list them for me. I have the site added to my favorites. Again thanks! You folks are GREAT! :o)
My old one is full of 5 or 6 different trailing sedums and the edges are done in pink & white Allysium trailing over the sides.

I have a nice old rusty wheelbarrow that I keep on the side of my driveway and I plant my squash in it every year. I also put nasturtiums and cosmos and a couple of sunflowers in it for color.
I never thought of vegetables but what a good idea - herbs would be nice too :-)
