The city put a "NO PARKING SIGN" in front of my house. There are no sidewalks so the sign is right on my lawn. I hate that sign, I hated cutting the grass around it. I really disliked it!! So I planted MG there. I keeped them off the sign. You could see that it said NO PARKING. I just let it grow up the pole. Well the cops just left and they wanted to remove all of it! I finally convinced them only to trim it. Let me tell you NEVER give a cop clippers!!!

The Cops Cut My MG
I think I would take the whole thing down (sign). Let them find a place on their 'property'.

Oh, Rose, I can sympathize, though I have to admit, I don't know what MG is. I've seen it mentioned on some of the threads, but never had the guts to ask! Guess I didn't want to sound stupid.
We have a similar problem with the road department hacking at the brush along the roadsides. They use a huge cutter that hacks away at the sapling alders, laying them over or leaving sharps stumps that look like pikes!
For years I've made a point of keeping our easement along the road clear of deadfall and keeping the ditch clear. Every spring and fall, I rake everything out. Being a country road, as the summer progresses, the weeds start to fill in. There are large pushki and fireweed and goatsbeard... they look quite attractive.
Last month the road crew came through cutting everything down. I tried to talk them out of it, but to no avail. They said the corners were dangerous because no one could see around them. As it turned out, the equipment couldn't do the job anyway, so all we got was this terrible mess along the roadside. They didn't even pick up the cuttings. I hope they were more polite when they trimmed your MG!
Weezingreens, MG is short for morning glories. They weren't covering the sign only the pole. About once a week I would trim it away from the sign. The police were polite but they still made a mess. I asked them to move the sign so it would not be in my way. They said they couldn't do that. They also said someone must have filed a complaint. I can't believe that it was one of my neighbors the MG has been there all summer. OH well, I'll think of something else to plant there next summer.
Help me out here.... isn't MG morning glories? As in MG War?
I sorta know how ya feel. The Transit Authority put a bus stop in front of the house next door! Now not only do we have to put up with the fumes and some not so safe-looking people hanging around and even using our porch as a bus shelter when it's raining, WE CAN'T EVEN PARK IN FRONT OF OUR OWN HOUSE!!!!!
Celia, I fill for you. The NO PARKING is bad enough. I don't know if I could put up with the bus and the people. Maybe you could plant some thorny plant around the bus stop :) That might keep the people away.
Rose
Celia, I would be making up some Garden signs for my porch!
Something like This is MY porch
It is part of MY home
NOT a bus stop
On YOUR route home
I would also be calling the transportation Dept. and voice my complaint. They need to provide bus users with a sheltered seating area that will allow them protection from the rain without tresspassing on private property!
Rose......how does the saying go?????? One day it's yours! And the next it's theirs'! Elaine
Celia, I have to say, your bus stop problem makes my issues pale in comparison. I'd put up a sign that said "Beastiality Aversion Therapy Center". No one will stand on your porch under that sign!
LOL Weezingreens you never know! A sign like that might have them all up on the porch seeking help!
A nice touch might be to tether a sheep or two on the lawn!
LOL You guys are TOO FUNNY. Maybe I painted the picture a bit worse than it really is. Only some people come up on the porch when it rains. So it can be a little scary at times. But, I would hate to make someone stand in the rain, when I could provide a little shelter for a little while. (I must be getting soft in my old age. )But for the most part, the most incovenience is the parking.
But, not to confuse matters, I need to say that this is my OLD house that I moved from last year. My children (grown) are now there. We live close by, so I am there visiting alot. (Spying on them!)
I really don't have any nice plants or flowers in the front of that house. But thanks for all your concern!!!!
Rose
Plant some poison ivy around the sign and make the cops take it down :)
Paul
Great idea! I have a really well-rooted vining plant that I would be most happy to send you ;) Post-paid even! I know my neighbor would be more than happy to dig it up for me.
We aren't supposed to plant anything in our easements, but a lot of us do anyway; included in the deed is a clause that gives local authorities (or their representatives) the right to remove the plant at any time. Now if I could just get the poison ivy to grow up the utility poles!
